It was an honor to host the New Netherlands Ambassador Embassy of the Netherlands in Zimbabwe yesterday to showcase our work on wetland conservation. We had a productive session with the Zimbabwe Wetlands Trust (ZWT), Conservation Society of Monavale (COSMO) and the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA), including an insightful play about the importance of wetlands and the threats they face.

A huge thank you to the Netherlands for funding this project and supporting our efforts to protect these vital ecosystems!

🦅 BirdLife Zimbabwe is taking flight to protect our vultures!

Over three powerful days in April, we brought together 80 participants from 25 organisations across , Falls, and to tackle one of the biggest silent threats facing our wildlife: (Pb) poisoning from ammunition.

These weren't just meetings—they were a catalyst for change. Here's what we achieved:

✅ Raised awareness about vultures as keystone species and nature's ultimate clean-up crew
✅ Raised awareness about the effect of lead on vultures and other species
✅ Revealed the staggering economic value of vulture conservation: US$141 MILLION per year for Zimbabwe alone
✅ Exposed hidden human health risks through the One Health Approach
✅ Laid the groundwork for tangible ways to phase out lead ammunition

From safari operators to government agencies like ZPWMA and the Department of Veterinary Services, the room was filled with decision-makers ready to act. The cost of doing nothing? US$24 million per year in lost welfare for Zimbabwe.

One hunter has already committed to switching from lead to brass bullets, with plans to upscale this to an entire safari club. Change starts with one person, but the impact will ripple across ecosystems. 🌍

The future of our vultures—and our economy—depends on the choices we make today.

🌊 92 PEOPLE. 5 VILLAGES. 1 MISSION: SAVE OUR WETLANDS!🌊

What an incredible four days! From 24-27 March 2026, BirdLife Zimbabwe joined forces with Gutu Rural District Council and the Environmental Management Agency to transform communities into wetland guardians across Chinyaure 2, Widgeon 5A, Inyatsitsi, Chipisa, and Markdale! 🙌

THE NUMBERS THAT INSPIRE:
👩‍🌾 54 women trained
👨‍🌾 38 men trained
📍 5 communities empowered
🌾 ~26 hectares of critical wetland identified and mapped!

What we covered:
💧 Wetlands = life! (Water purification, carbon storage, flood control, bird habitat, cultural heritage, livelihoods)
⚠️ The harsh reality of Zimbabwe's wetlands: 21% severely degraded, 61% moderately degraded, and only 18% are stable
🛡️ Solutions: No burning, no invasive trees, paddocking systems, fencing core areas.

The "AHA!" moments:
Participants were shocked to learn rivers, dams, AND lakes are wetlands! That moment when you realise your backyard stream is actually global conservation priority? Priceless. 💡

Ramsar Recognition = Global Significance:
Driefontein Grasslands isn't just local land — it's internationally protected wetland that attracts global funding and cooperation! 🌍

This is how you build a movement. Village by village. Wetland by wetland. Future by future. 🌿

Special recognition: Ms Bangura (EMA) and Mr Muzamba (Gutu RDC) for bringing the Ramsar expertise, and to the 92 community members now equipped to defend their water sources! 💪
