🌊 92 PEOPLE. 5 VILLAGES. 1 MISSION: SAVE OUR WETLANDS!🌊
What an incredible four days! From 24-27 March 2026, BirdLife Zimbabwe joined forces with Gutu Rural District Council and the Environmental Management Agency to transform communities into wetland guardians across Chinyaure 2, Widgeon 5A, Inyatsitsi, Chipisa, and Markdale! 🙌
THE NUMBERS THAT INSPIRE:
👩🌾 54 women trained
👨🌾 38 men trained
📍 5 communities empowered
🌾 ~26 hectares of critical wetland identified and mapped!
What we covered:
💧 Wetlands = life! (Water purification, carbon storage, flood control, bird habitat, cultural heritage, livelihoods)
⚠️ The harsh reality of Zimbabwe's wetlands: 21% severely degraded, 61% moderately degraded, and only 18% are stable
🛡️ Solutions: No burning, no invasive trees, paddocking systems, fencing core areas.
The "AHA!" moments:
Participants were shocked to learn rivers, dams, AND lakes are wetlands! That moment when you realise your backyard stream is actually global conservation priority? Priceless. 💡
Ramsar Recognition = Global Significance:
Driefontein Grasslands isn't just local land — it's internationally protected wetland that attracts global funding and cooperation! 🌍
This is how you build a movement. Village by village. Wetland by wetland. Future by future. 🌿
Special recognition: Ms Bangura (EMA) and Mr Muzamba (Gutu RDC) for bringing the Ramsar expertise, and to the 92 community members now equipped to defend their water sources! 💪
