Centre for Conflict Management & Transformation - CCMT We work to transform the ways in which societies deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving.
(1)

Formed in 2002 as the Coalition on Conflict Management Trust, the organisation transformed into the Centre for Conflict Management and Transformation (CCMT) in 2003. Using a multi-faceted approach, we partner with local government, civil society and communities to find culturally appropriate means to strengthen societies' capacity to deal with conflicts constructively. The nature and scope of our

work has evolved over the years as we continue to grow and develop as an organisation. In 2007, CCMT was involved in the setting up of Community Associations dealing with every day conflicts affecting communities in Zimbabwe. Today, the associations operate independently of CCMT whilst maintaining close linkages and sharing of expertise. We also conduct interventions which see us partnering and working with Zimbabwean communities at all levels, from the grassroots right through to community leaders and local government. As a learning organisation, we aim to ensure that all aspects of our work are informed by research and are currently working to develop and strengthen our research focus.

🌍 Happy World Environment Day!
We're fighting climate change β€” but are we leaving communities behind in the process?

Dams, solar farms, conservation areas β€” these are the solutions we need for our planet. But too often, they come at a cost that falls on the most vulnerable: communities displaced from their land, their livelihoods, and their homes. At times this leads to environmental conflicts within communities as well as between communities and developers.

What do you think β€” how can we combine environmental protection and the protection of communities' livelihoods? Let us down know in the comments! πŸ‘‡

🌱 Leadership starts in the community.

Today, we kicked off Day 1 of our Leadership & Relationship Building Workshop with members of the Mbembeswana Community Representative Group and the Irrigation Management Committee at Eagle's Nest, Gweru.

Community members from the Mbembeswana Irrigation Scheme had initially been displaced. A mutual agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, based on a dialogue facilitated by CCMT, ensured their adequate compensation.

Now, community representatives and irrigation committee members are sitting side by side β€” recognising that whether you are advocating for your community's needs or managing a shared resource that sustains livelihoods, good leadership is at the heart of it all.

Conversations were honest and energetic β€” with one shared conviction at the centre: that strong relationships are the foundation for peace, social cohesion and sustainable resource management.

This workshop is facilitated by CCMT in partnership with the Department of Irrigation πŸ’š

When anxiety takes hold, one of the most powerful things we can do is reach out. 🌱

Food insecurity is much more than a logistical challenge. The uncertainty of not knowing where the next meal will come from, or how to feed your family, can feel isolating and overwhelming.

Something shifts when people come together. When communities connect, create spaces to share experiences and learn from one another, people realise they are not alone.

And it goes further than emotional support. Diverse perspectives β€” different knowledge systems, lived experiences, and ways of doing things β€” are the seedbed of innovation. The solutions that truly move communities, emerge from conversation, from trust, and from the collective knowledge that only connection makes possible.

Safe spaces are not a soft addition to food security work. They are part of the solution.

Children don't need to understand displacement to feel it. πŸ’š

A parent under stress is a changed parent. But the reverse is also true. A supported caregiver is one of the most powerful protective forces a child can have. This is why, when we talk about the mental health impacts of displacement on children, we have to talk about the whole family. You cannot protect a child's wellbeing without also caring for the people that child depends on.

Children don't need to understand displacement to feel it. πŸ’š

When families are displaced, children absorb the world around them β€” not through words or explanations, but through the emotional state of the people they love and depend on most.

A parent under stress is a changed parent. Research shows that when caregivers are overwhelmed, stressed and suffering from anxiety, children feel every bit of that. Over time, this can affect children's mental health and well-being in ways that outlast the displacement itself.

This Mental Health Week we're shining a light on something too often overlooked: the mental health toll of development-induced displacement. πŸ§ πŸ’š

When people are uprooted from their homes, often in the name of progress, the psychological harm is real and long-lasting.

The stress doesn't arrive all at once. It builds across every phase β€” from the uncertainty and powerlessness of anticipating displacement, through the disruption of being moved, to the grief of losing land, community, and identity that can linger long after resettlement.

But the evidence is clear: when affected communities are genuinely consulted, kept informed, and given meaningful agency over decisions that affect their lives, the mental health risks are significantly reduced. Transparent, inclusive planning is not a bureaucratic nicety β€” it is a form of protection!

Communities already hold the power to transform their lives.
Our role is to help them unlock it!
