World Water Day 2026
Celebrating Water. Sustaining Life. Strengthening Communities.

Today, Africa AHEAD joins the global community in commemorating World Water Day 2026 - a moment to reflect on the vital role water plays in our health, livelihoods, and sustainable development.

Across Africa, access to safe and reliable water remains both a challenge and an opportunity. Through community-led approaches, we continue to empower households and local institutions to take charge of their water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices - because lasting change begins at the grassroots.

At Africa AHEAD, we believe that:

Every community deserves access to safe and clean water
Sustainable solutions are built through participation and ownership
Hygiene education is as critical as infrastructure

We reaffirm our commitment to strengthening resilience against water scarcity, improving water governance, and promoting innovative, locally-driven solutions that leave no one behind.

Call to Action - Let us all play our part: conserve water, protect our sources, and champion equitable access for all. Together, we can build healthier communities and a more water-secure future.

Empowering Farmers for the 2025/26 Agricultural Season

Ahead of the 2025/26 agricultural season, 53 lead farmers from Makoni Ward 7 received agricultural inputs (maize seed, NUA45 Beans, Sunflower seed, Compound D and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer as well as 9 varieties of Fruit trees) following a practical Agroecology training. The farmers were drawn from the Chinyudze, Nyamukamani, and Tafadzwa clusters, and the training equipped them with sustainable farming practices to boost productivity, resilience, and environmental stewardship.

This initiative was delivered by Africa AHEAD in partnership with Agricultural Advisory and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS, formerly Agritex), with generous support from the Skat Foundation. Together, we are strengthening local food systems and supporting farmers to thrive sustainably.

An overjoyed 64-year-old farmer, Gogo Marufu, a member of Thuthukani Garden in Bulawayo, shared:
“The seeds we received will go a long way in supporting our community garden, especially for us senior citizens who rely on the produce we harvest to feed our families and earn income through sales.”

The journey continued with a groundbreaking Cookout Competition, where the community gardens that received 10 diverse vegetable seed varieties showcased their nutrition knowledge by preparing creative, balanced meals in a bid to win.

This Cookout Competition was an initiative done as part of the WASH and Nutrition project, which was funded by UNICEF Zimbabwe, implemented by Africa AHEAD-Zimbabwe, in partnership with The City of Bulawayo and the Government of Zimbabwe.

From the ground up, we built an innovation hub we call home for the communities we serve.

Africa AHEAD-Zimbabwe is proud to announce the official launch of the AHEAD Resource Centre (ARC) in Headlands, Makoni District, made possible through the generous support of Skat Foundation.

The ARC is a hub for innovation, training and research dedicated to advancing development through knowledge sharing and sustainable practices.

Last week, we hosted our first ever Agroecology training for smallholder farmers in Ward 7, focusing on climate-smart agriculture and reconnecting with the principles of preservative farming, rooted in traditional wisdom and resilience.

Thanks to the presence of MP Hon. F. W Mapfumo and representatives from various line ministries from the Government of Zimbabwe and all stakeholders in attendance, the training was a groundbreaking success.

As The Executive Director of Africa AHEAD, Regis Matimati stated, ''We are off to a good start and a promising future for our communities.''

Nutrition? You may be wondering!
Yes, Africa AHEAD-Zimbabwe is bridging the nexus between WASH and Nutrition. If we can rehabilitate water points, we ought to empower communities through nutrition gardens.

Early July, we sowed seeds of hope by supporting 30 community gardens and 20 school gardens in Bulawayo with 10 types of vegetable seeds each, promoting diversified healthy eating and food security. This initiative will improve diets by enhancing the running feeding programs in schools and ensure children receive nutritious meals. Moreso, having educated communities on diverse vegetable cultivation, we are positive that they will yield produce for balanced diet meals for their families.

Thanks to our May - July 2025 UNICEF funded project, in partnership with The City of Bulawayo and the Government of Zimbabwe.

We are thrilled to share that MP Hon. Walter Farai Mapfumo and Ward 7 Councillor Matthew Dakura recently graced us with a visit at the newly established Nyamukamani solar-powered piped water scheme in Headlands.

This scheme, established this July by Africa AHEAD in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe and funded by Skat Foundation is designed to serve a local clinic, business center, a school, six churches and households with clean and reliable water.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this dream a reality.
