Deaf Women Included Deaf Women Included (DWI), is a grassroots deaf women organisation founded in 2014 that works with deaf women from across all provinces in Zimbabwe.

Last week we conducted a Feminist Leadership Academy with 20 deaf women. The academy focused on how we can use the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2025 and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in our advocacy as women with disabilties.

Meet Cathy, one of our partners from Deaf Women Included (DWI).

As a survivor of gender-based violence, Cathy is helping build Kushinga House, a safe, accessible space in Guruve, Zimbabwe, designed by disabled women, for disabled women.

Why does Kushinga House matter?

Too many disabled women and girls in Guruve have nowhere safe to turn. DWI is supporting deaf women and girls to escape gender-based violence and rebuild their lives. Through the creation of Kushinga House, deaf and disabled women and girls will have an accessible safe house, designed by women who truly understand their experiences and what they need.

Over the last 12 months officers from Deaf Women Included, including our partners from the communities in which we work, have been undergoing training on Violence Against Women and Girls under a program titled Building Technical Capacity of WRO to combat VAWG; supported by Social Development Direct. WE learned together with officers from Msasa and Emthonjeni. Yesterday was graduation day....

When we visited Gweshe area at the beginning of May, a huge billboard caught our eyes. Not in Our Area!; the Chief of the area, Mambo Negomo, declared. No child marriages in our area, no domestic violence. Violence is not tolerated. This is important in creating safe communities. We hope all community leaders send clear messages like this in their area. Not in Our Area!

Last Friday we went to Gweru for a Feminist- Oriented Digital Capacity Building. This training directly empowered 20 women and girls with disabilities and their allies with the digital skills necessary for networking, alliance building, online organizing, and enhanced security.
