Membership Spotlight: The Organisation of Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP Zimbabwe) 🎥

At the NANGO Regional NGO EXPO & Winter School, Bulawayo edition (24-25 July 2026), we had the privilege of sitting down with ORAP — an organisation whose work centres on fighting all forms of poverty, principally among the rural communities of women, men and youth.

This conversation is part of our ongoing effort to spotlight our members and the impact they're driving across Zimbabwe's civic space.

The event was held under the theme "Fortifying Inclusive Civic Space and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Effective Development Impact," made possible with the support of the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe, and in partnership with the National Association of Youth Organisations, COSPE Zimbabwe, Christian Aid Zimbabwe, Sightsavers and others.

🕊️ Statement of Condolences: On the Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster

The National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO) extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families, communities, and all those affected by the tragic Lake Kariba ferry disaster.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, those still awaiting news of missing relatives, the survivors recovering from the ordeal, and the wider communities affected.

We also extend our appreciation to the rescue teams, divers, boat crews, volunteers, fishermen, and all stakeholders working tirelessly to support search, rescue, and recovery efforts.

NANGO joins the nation in mourning and stands in solidarity with the people of Kariba.

That's a wrap on the 2026 NANGO Regional NGO EXPO & Winter School! 🎉

Three cities. Three winter schools. Countless handshakes, exhibition stands, and at least one exhibitor who definitely lost their voice from talking about their programmes all day (we see you, and we appreciate you 😅).

From Mutare to Bulawayo and finally Harare, under the theme "Fortifying Inclusive Civic Space and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Effective Development Impact," we were genuinely overwhelmed by the energy and support from every exhibitor, invited guest, and even the curious onlookers who wandered in and stayed for the whole thing.

To our exhibitors — thank you for showing up and putting your work on full display as we keep pushing to improve visibility of civil society's role, impact, and contribution to national development.

To our invited guests — thank you for honouring us with your presence, your remarks, and your solidarity (and for pretending not to notice when the mic cut out).

Day 2 | Northern Region Winter School | The Questions Driving the Disability Inclusion Conversation

Disability inclusion requires us to look beyond policies and ask whether people are actually able to enjoy their rights, access services and participate meaningfully in society.

Our side session, “Advancing Disability Inclusion and Rights: Voices from the Marginal,” in collaboration with Sightsavers, is putting some critical questions at the centre of the conversation:

1. Women and girls with albinism
What specific forms of discrimination, stigma and violence do they experience? What protective measures exist under the ADP and national law, and where are the gaps?

2. Mental, intellectual and psychosocial disabilities
How can health, education and justice systems become more responsive while upholding the UNCRPD principles of legal capacity and community inclusion?

3. Women with disabilities
What intersecting barriers affect their access to livelihoods and healthcare, and their protection from gender-based violence? How can the Persons with Disabilities Act better respond?

4. Youth participation
How can young persons with disabilities be meaningfully included in decision-making rather than treated only as beneficiaries?

5. Assistive technology
How can affordable and accessible technologies help advance participation, independence and inclusion?

These questions are being examined through the lens of the ADP, UNCRPD and Persons with Disabilities Act, while drawing lessons from the Inclusive Africa Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

The objective is clear: turn dialogue into practical recommendations that institutions and practitioners can carry forward.

Day 2 | Northern Region Winter School | Disability Inclusion

Disability inclusion is not just about participation. It is about ensuring that every person can enjoy their rights, access opportunities and participate meaningfully in society without discrimination or barriers.

Our Winter School side session, “Advancing Disability Inclusion and Rights: Voices from the Marginal,” in collaboration with Sightsavers, is creating space for practitioners and advocates to examine some of the specific challenges faced by:

• Women and girls with albinism
• Persons with mental, intellectual and psychosocial disabilities
• Women with disabilities

The session is helping participants deepen their understanding of the rights, risks and needs of these groups while examining how existing legal and policy frameworks are translating into action.

Key frameworks under discussion include the ADP, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), and the Persons with Disabilities Act.

The conversation is also exploring two important drivers of inclusion:

Youth participation – ensuring young people with disabilities are not simply beneficiaries, but active participants in shaping decisions that affect their lives.

Assistive technologies – using technology and appropriate tools to reduce barriers and expand access, participation and independence.

Participants are also sharing lessons from the Inclusive Africa Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, with a focus on turning learning into practical recommendations that institutions and practitioners can carry forward.

Inclusion requires more than good policies. It requires implementation, participation and action.
