TransSmart Trust stands in solidarity with transgender and gender-diverse individuals who have been forced to flee xenophobic violence and hostility in South Africa.

No one should have to choose between their safety and their identity. For many transgender people, displacement is made even more difficult by discrimination, lack of access to essential services, and the trauma of leaving behind their safe spaces, livelihoods, and support networks.

As an organization committed to advancing the livelihoods , dignity, and wellbeing of transgender and intersex communities, TransSmart Trust is working to support affected individuals relocating to safety. We are committed to providing, within our capacity, psychosocial support, referrals, information, and assistance to help ease their transition and connect them with available services.

To everyone affected: you are not alone. Your safety, dignity, and humanity matter, and we remain committed to standing with you during this difficult time.
So far Transsmart Trust has managed to help eight transpersons in Capetown with the support from other partners. TransSmart Trust is appealing to organisations that are open to partnering, donations in any form and support to make the transition home for the trans community members more comfortable.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Ten years ago, our journey began with 15 transgender people gathered in a small room at Trafalgar Court. We came together to create a safe space for support, belonging, and hope. As our community grew from 15 to 25, then 35 members, we realized our voices deserved to be heard. That is how TransSmart Trust was born.

Over the past decade, we have grown into a trusted community-led organization advocating for access to healthcare and the recognition of transgender and intersex people in Zimbabwe. With the support of partners including the Global Fund (through the PAAR Grant), GATE, Astraea, The Other Foundation, Hivos, AIDSFONDS, DANM Foundation, and many others, we have expanded our impact and strengthened partnerships with government, traditional leaders, healthcare providers, and civil society.

Together, we have supported intersex and transgender children with school fees, provided medical assistance, promoted income-generating projects, and empowered countless members of our community.

As we celebrate 10 years, we honour everyone who has walked this journey with us. From a small room at Trafalgar Court to becoming a respected voice for transgender and intersex communities, our story is proof that when a community comes together, lasting change is possible.

TransSmart Trust participated in the GC8 orientation workshop organized by National AIDS Council Zimbabwe (NAC) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ ). One of the objectives, “ Gender advocates and activists ensure that programs are gender transformative and evidence based to address the priorities of women, girls, LGBTIQ+, and other marginalized groups, and that metrics, budgets, and governance secure this”. TransSmart Trust is going into the GC8 grant writing representing transgender community and this is a good opportunity for us to strengthen our priorities.
