🌍🇿🇼 Zimbabwe has a 2026–2030 National Youth Policy. But where is the Youth Bill?

A National Youth Policy is important. But if we are serious about youth participation in governance, we need more than policy commitments.

We need a Youth Bill that guarantees meaningful youth participation, representation and accountability in decision-making.

Young people should not have to wait for institutions to decide whether they deserve a seat at the table.

Youth participation must be structured. Protected. Institutionalised.

The policy gives us direction.

The Youth Bill should give us a legal framework.

So we ask:

🌍 HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 ✨

Different Contexts. Common Aspirations.

From Kenya to Zambia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and across Africa, our realities may differ, but young people share many of the same aspirations of decent work, opportunity, affordable energy, meaningful participation and a future we can believe in.

Africa is home to some of the world’s most critical minerals for the energy transition. Yet too often, our resources leave the continent as raw or semi-processed materials, while communities remain with limited economic opportunities.

So the question is not simply what Africa has. It is who benefits from what Africa has.

As young Africans, we must ask difficult questions: Who owns our resources? Who profits? Where do the revenues go? Are communities benefiting? Are today’s decisions creating opportunities for the generations that will inherit their consequences?

We cannot allow green industrialisation to reproduce the same extractive patterns under a new name.

Africa’s transition must create local value, decent jobs, stronger industries and shared prosperity.

We must participate. We must question. We must follow the money. And we must hold power accountable.Because guarding Africa’s resources is ultimately about guarding our future.

💧 WHAT DOES WATER HAVE TO DO WITH A GIRL’S FUTURE? EVERYTHING.

For many girls, access to water can determine whether they have time for school, leadership, play and opportunities or whether their days are shaped by the burden of finding water.

🌍 Islands of prosperity in a sea of poverty.

There is no reason why, in 2026, this should still describe the reality of communities living alongside Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth.

Mining should not mean displacement for communities, environmental destruction, disrupted livelihoods and exclusion from decisions about their own resources.

The people living where minerals are extracted must not be treated as an afterthought.

Communities are stakeholders. Communities must have a voice. Communities must benefit.

We need a mining sector that delivers:

⛏️ Fair benefit-sharing
🌱 Environmental protection
🏘️ Protection of communities and livelihoods
🗣️ Meaningful participation
💰 Transparency in mineral revenues
🤝 Local economic opportunities
⚖️ Accountability for harm

Zimbabwe’s minerals belong to the future of our people not just the balance sheets of those who extract them.

Our minerals must build communities, not displace them.

The future of mining must be people-centred, accountable and just.

🌏 Happy New Week ✨

What if being rich in natural resources can actually become a country’s greatest vulnerability?

This is the “resource curse “ the paradox where countries endowed with vast mineral wealth can experience weak institutions, corruption, inequality, environmental degradation and poor economic diversification, while the value generated from their resources fails to translate into broad-based development.

Zimbabwe knows this reality.We have gold, lithium, diamonds and platinum beneath our soil resources with enormous potential to finance development and transform lives.Yet we must ask,How much of this wealth is actually converted into public value?

When mining revenues are difficult to trace, contracts lack transparency, communities bear environmental and social costs and extraction creates limited local value beyond the mine, resource abundance can deepen rather than reduce inequality.

The issue is not whether Zimbabwe is resource-rich.It is whether our institutions are strong enough to ensure that resource wealth serves the public interest.

Young people must be asking ,Who benefits? Who decides? Where does the money go? And what are we leaving for future generations?

This week, let’s move beyond celebrating what lies beneath our soil.Let’s demand accountability for what comes out of it.

🌍 Collaboration is key to building a stronger Youth Bill.

One of today’s highlights at the Youth Accountability Roundtable supported by Youth Democracy Network was an engaging panel discussion featuring representatives from , the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC) and WELEAD-Africa Regional

The discussion focused on how youth organisations and key stakeholders can consolidate their efforts towards the promulgation of the proposed Youth Bill.

The message was clear: achieving meaningful policy change requires unity, collaboration and sustained engagement by young people.

Together, we’re working towards a Youth Bill that truly reflects the needs, aspirations and voices of Zimbabwe’s youth.
