🌍Young people are not just the future—they are actively shaping accountability today.

During the Youth Accountability Hangout, supported by ActionAid Zimbabwe, young people engaged in an Accountability Café focused on three key themes: Taxation, the Youth Bill, and Natural Resource Governance.

They called for fair taxation and transparency in how public resources are used, responsible management of natural resources that benefits communities, and a Youth Bill that protects their rights and strengthens their voice in governance.

These conversations made one thing clear: young people are informed, engaged, and ready to hold leaders accountable.

🌍Day 1 of the ICLD - Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy Training focused on practical tools that strengthen participatory democracy, including Citizens Report Cards—an important mechanism for amplifying citizen voice and improving service delivery.

We also explored the core principles of P-E-T-A: Participation, Equity, Transparency, and Accountability.

These principles are central to building inclusive and responsive governance systems. At Youth Accountability Initiative, they guide how we work with young people to engage, track public resources, and demand accountability in their communities.

The Youth Accountability Initiative is currently participating in a Training of Trainers on participatory democracy in local government budgeting in Cape Town, hosted and powered by the ICLD - Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy, and supported by TrustAfrica

Our Team Lead, Munashe Masiyiwa, and Programs Lead, Thandiwe Ndlovu, are representing the organisation in this important learning engagement.

This training strengthens our institutional capacity to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to meaningfully participate in governance processes, influence local budgeting decisions, and demand accountability in their communities.

We remain committed to advancing participatory democracy and strengthening youth-led governance across communities.

🌍Young people came together at the Youth Accountability Hangout supported by ActionAid Zimbabwe to engage in meaningful conversations on youth empowerment, accountability and governance.

The platform provided space for youth to review progress on the National Youth Empowerment Strategy (NYES) Action Plan, discuss the importance of domestic resource mobilisation for youth programmes, and strengthen advocacy efforts towards the National Youth Bill.

Through discussions, dialogue and creative content, young people shared experiences, raised key accountability questions and contributed ideas to ensure that youth policies translate into real opportunities.

Together, we are turning youth voices into action and accountability.

🌍Strengthening youth voices through knowledge and participation.

During the youth panel discussion led by Youth Accountability Initiative Programs Lead Thandiwe Ndlovu, participants explored critical issues around natural resource governance and youth participation, deepening their understanding of their role in accountability processes.

On natural resource governance, Tracy Mafa representing Global Platform Zimbabwe highlighted the importance of transparency in resource management and addressed concerns around illicit financial flows. Young people were encouraged to track resource use, raise awareness and demand accountability to ensure resources benefit communities.

On youth participation, Clementine Murombo from the Zimbabwe Youth Council shared insights on youth organization registration and support systems available to strengthen youth-led initiatives.

The session equipped young people with the knowledge and practical skills needed to participate meaningfully and influence governance processes.

The hangout was supported by ActionAid Zimbabwe

🌍 Young people are proving that accountability begins with action.

During the Youth Accountability Hangout supported by ActionAid Zimbabwe, young people questioned, engaged, and held leadership to account in the Parliamentary Hotseat with Parliamentary Youth Caucus Vice-Chair Hon. Richard Tsvangirai

When young people understand policies and governance processes, they can track promises, challenge gaps, and advocate for change.

They are not just the future—they are active citizens shaping today.

🌍Youth Accountability Initiative (YAI) volunteers recently participated in the Community Led Monitoring (CLM) Strategy Development Consultative Meeting under FACT Zimbabwe

They brought forward critical youth perspectives on improving the monitoring of HIV, TB, and Malaria services—highlighting gaps, addressing stigma, and advocating for stronger, more inclusive health systems.

Their participation reinforces a powerful message: young people are not just beneficiaries of health services, but active partners in ensuring these systems work for everyone.

🌍What does accountability mean to young people?

At the Youth Accountability Hangout, Yemurai Muchato shared that it starts with knowledge — but doesn’t stop there. Young people must use what they know to ask questions, engage leaders, and demand accountability.

It’s about turning awareness into action and ensuring that promises made to young people are fulfilled in our communities.

Let’s keep building a generation that speaks up and holds power to account. 💬✊🏾

Youth Accountability Hangout Recap 🌍✊🏾

The Youth Accountability Initiative, supported by ActionAid Zimbabwe, hosted a powerful Youth Accountability Hangout under the theme:
“Holding the State Accountable: Youth, Budget & the NYES Action Plan.”

This engagement was grounded in our commitment to:
“Creating Brave Spaces where Young Voices Question, Engage, and Hold Power to Account.”

Young people came together to:
🔹 Interrogate national budget priorities
🔹 Engage on the NYES Action Plan

🔹 Share lived experiences and practical solutions

This was more than a dialogue—it was a clear call for youth-centered governance and responsible leadership.
