When development is locally led…

Perhaps…

Programs will be wholesome, not piecemeal. Collaboration will be possible and the impact higher.
CSOs will be able to support communities more effectively and the focus will be the real felt needs, and not what a group of men in air conditioned buildings overlooking the ocean somewhere in Europe decided in between tea breaks

Emergencies will be treated as such without having to wait for international approvals where different time zones may affect swift, real time, life saving responses.

When the women say - we need a borehole - CSOs would be able to make a decision to have that happen- because it is what the women need the most: rather than forcing a 3 day workshop on them: because the budget line is rigid.

Perhaps…

What would it look like if development was *𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲* locally led?

At Trócaire, localisation is integral to how we work, collaborating and shifting power to our local partners to improve development outcomes.

Across the sector, what if local actors shaped priorities, designed solutions, and defined success? What if funding flowed in ways that support, rather that constrain, local leadership? And what if partnerships were grounded in trust, equity and accountability?

This vision is already within reach - but only if we act together.

Today, we are proud to share that we have signed a new invitation to action. We are inviting governments, donors, foundations and civil society to join us, and commit to:

After nearly six years of visionary leadership, Francoise Moudouthe will be stepping down as CEO on 30 June 2026 to pursue a new professional opportunity. Her unwavering commitment to gender justice and the integrity she brought to this work have left a lasting mark on AWDF and the communities we serve.

The AWDF Board has appointed Nana Zulu, currently Director of Programmes, as Interim CEO for a nine-month term, starting 1 July 2026. Nana brings strong leadership, deep institutional knowledge, and a clear commitment to advancing AWDF’s mission.

AWDF enters this transition from a position of strength, with a clear strategy, a dedicated team, and trusted partnerships across the continent.

We thank Françoise for her leadership and look forward to the journey ahead with Nana.

Having grown up in a rural community, I had a conviction that effective development work can only be meaningful if rural girls are at the center of the development agenda.

The expansion to rural communities was met with backlash by elite feminists in air conditioned buildings and hotel conferences.

I still insisted. Neglecting rural girls meant I was being fake. I chose the unpopular path…
