Philip Village in Ward 2, under Chief Sogwala, has been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF), marking an important milestone in the community’s journey towards improved sanitation, hygiene and health.

MASO extends its sincere appreciation to MASO Board Chair Mr Willie Mponda and the MASO Board Members for their unwavering support and commitment to strengthening community-led development. We also express our gratitude to Gweru DDC Mr Tarisai Mudadigwa for his continued support and leadership in advancing healthier communities.

We acknowledge the presence of Director of Environmental Public Health Victor Nyamandi, Chief Sogwala, Headman Phillip, Africa Ahead representatives, health personnel and community members who contributed to this important occasion.

ODF is not the end of the journey, but a renewed commitment to sustaining clean, safe and resilient communities. Organised by MASO in collaboration with Africa Ahead.

Philip Village in Ward 2, under Chief Sogwala, has celebrated its Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, a powerful achievement made possible through sustained community action on sanitation and hygiene.
The celebration brought together community members, local leadership, health personnel, MASO and partners, with song, dance and performances adding colour to this important milestone. As we celebrate, we also renew the commitment to keep toilets clean and functional, practise handwashing, protect water sources and ensure that no household returns to open defecation.
ODF is not the end of the sanitation journey, it is the beginning of a new commitment. The event was organised by MASO in collaboration with Africa Ahead, through the Community Health Methodology project, funded by Africa Ahead with support from the Oak Foundation.

Building stronger communities starts with strengthening the people who serve them. MASO recently conducted a Solution Focused Approach training for its staff, Board members, and the MASO Youth Network, equipping participants with practical skills to identify strengths, develop solutions, and foster positive change.
By investing in leadership, collaboration, and solution oriented thinking, MASO continues to build the capacity of its team and youth leaders to deliver impactful, community driven interventions that transform lives and strengthen resilience.
