What a fruitful week it is!

BIC-CDS is participating in the Brethren in Christ Church Annual General Conference, where we are engaging with farmers, church members, partners and other stakeholders in one place.

The conference is providing a valuable platform to showcase climate-smart crops such as sorghum and groundnuts, Umfushwa Wendumba lowoMbhida to promote locally produced products.

It is also creating opportunities to share knowledge, exchange ideas, answer questions and strengthen relationships. Bringing farmers and stakeholders together in one place is promoting learning, collaboration and sustainable community development.

We are grateful to everyone who is visiting our exhibition stand and look forward to many more meaningful conversations throughout the conference.

Why Research Matters

“What if the biggest lesson from a project is something you never planned to measure?Sometimes, the most important answers do not come from reports. They come from the people we work with every day.”

Research is more than a report written at the end of a project. It helps us understand what is working, what is not, and what we can do better.

In every community, people have knowledge that cannot be found in reports or statistics. By listening to their experiences, we learn lessons that help us improve our work and make better decisions.

Through the LINCZ Learning and Research Hub, researchers speak with community members about their everyday lives, not just project activities. These conversations often reveal important issues that we did not expect. For example, research has shown how climate change is changing the roles of men and women in many households. If we had only measured our planned project indicators, we would have missed these important changes.

Research also reminds us that communities are not just beneficiaries, but are partners in finding solutions.

Why Research Matters

“What if the biggest lesson from a project is something you never planned to measure?Sometimes, the most important answers do not come from reports. They come from the people we work with every day.”

Research is more than a report written at the end of a project. It helps us understand what is working, what is not, and what we can do better.

In every community, people have knowledge that cannot be found in reports or statistics. By listening to their experiences, we learn lessons that help us improve our work and make better decisions.

Through the LINCZ Learning and Research Hub, researchers speak with community members about their everyday lives, not just project activities. These conversations often reveal important issues that we did not expect. For example, research has shown how climate change is changing the roles of men and women in many households. If we had only measured our planned project indicators, we would have missed these important changes.

Research also reminds us that communities are not just beneficiaries, but are partners in finding solutions.

In natural resource management and nature-based solutions, technical knowledge is important, but community knowledge is equally valuable. Communities know the history of their land, the traditional practices that still work, why some projects have failed in the past, and who may be left behind. Their experiences help shape solutions that are practical and sustainable.

One community shared an important lesson. While a borehole improves water availability, it does not solve the challenge of carrying water home. This reminded us that providing water is not enough if people still struggle to get it home. Such insights help us design projects that respond to people's real needs.

Another important lesson is the need to document what we learn. When knowledge is not recorded, it can easily be lost. By documenting both successes and challenges in simple language, we ensure that communities, local leaders and future projects can benefit from today's lessons.

Research is not about proving that a project is successful. It is about listening, learning and making the next project even better.

The Plant That Heals the Land

Community Knowledge shared by 90-year-old Tshiyiwe Moyo.

For years,communities have worked with nature to restore gullies and degraded land and protect it for future generations.

Ninety year old Tshiyiwe remembers how communities used inhlaba (aloe) to restore damaged land.

"When we saw gullies becoming bigger and the soil being washed away, we planted aloe," she says. "Our parents taught us that aloe holds the soil together. Once it grows, the land slowly begins to recover."

She explains that aloe survives where many other plants struggle.

Aloe grows well on dry, rocky and degraded land, making it ideal for restoring gullies. As the plants spread, their roots help hold the soil in place, reducing erosion caused by heavy rains.

"If you leave a gully to grow, it will swallow your fields," Tshiyiwe says with a smile.

"But if you plant aloe, you give the land a chance to live again."

Today, aloe continues to play an important role in restoring degraded landscapes.

It also provides flowers for bees, supports biodiversity and can be used for traditional medicine and other household purposes.

The wisdom of our elders reminds us that restoring the environment does not always require expensive solutions.

Sometimes, the answer has been growing around us all along.

"Take care of the land today, and it will take care of your children tomorrow." Tshiyiwe
