WFP drives innovation and positive change in disaster risk management, food and nutrition, smallholder farmer support, school meals and social protection. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been present in Zambia since 1967, working with the Government to support its people and national priorities. In Zambia, WFP operates within a dynamic landscape of agrarian livelihoods, urban-rural disparities, and vulnerability to climate shocks.

To support sustainability of Zambia’s Home-Grown School programme, WFP, in collaboration with Government, conducted School Garden Management and Nutrition trainings to strengthen the capacity of teachers, parents, and community members to establish and manage school gardens.

Through the France–supported School Gardens Project, WFP is reaching 8,500 learners in 7 schools, with solar drip-irrigated gardens, clean cookstoves, and WASH stations enabling learners to stay in school, learn, and thrive.

“Umupunga wa Lunga (Rice from Lunga), as we call it, is my son’s favourite. You can smell its aroma from a distance — it is very tasty too. Through the training provided by the Government, with support from WFP, we have learned different ways to make our food more nutritious for our children, such as adding peanut butter and improving the nutritional value of our locally grown food. With the rice seed inputs we received, I hope my field gives me a good yield this season, which will mean more food for my children.”— Sylvia

In Zambia's hard-to-reach Lunga District in Luapula Province, WFP, with support from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) through the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), WFP is helping over 700 smallholder rice farmers in Lunga recover from shocks through a package of integrated resilience interventions including seed inputs,climate- resilient farming training, nutrition support and market access to strengthen food security and sustain livelihoods.

"SOFF is not just about weather stations or technology. It is about people. For a farmer in a drought-prone district, this could mean receiving early warning information in time to safeguard livestock, preserve seeds, or adjust cropping decisions — rather than waiting until after losses have already occurred."— Cissy Kabasuuga, WFP Zambia Country Representative 🇿🇲

"There is less fish🐟 in the river now that the weather has changed, and fishing methods have also affected stocks. So I turned to farming, but seed is hard to find here in Lunga. There is no agro shop. I was privileged to receive rice seed from WFP, and I am hopeful for a good harvest enough food for my household, and a surplus to sell." — Leonard.
