𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏! ☔️

On Saturday, 17 October we had the most interesting outing to Wild Rescue NPO. 🐾🌱

The rain could not dampen our spirits as we headed out to the Wild Rescue NPO farm outside of Stilbaai. We learnt about plants and animals and how extremely important it is to NOT keep wild animals as pets. They are cute when they are small, but they grow big and they get wild - or simply too big to keep in your garden.

Wild Rescue NPO has quite a number of mountain tortoises that have been rescued from homes and gardens and they cannot be released back into the wild for various reasons - so the kind souls of Wild Rescue look after them by giving them shelter and food. 🐢

And there are Princess and Delilah, two Vervet monkeys. Princess was kept as a pet and when she became too naughty was brought here. Delilah was kept at a petting zoo which closed down. Both monkeys have issues and they do not trust people anymore. So sad. They can also not be released back into the wild - other monkeys will kill them. 🐵

We thank Wickus and Brenda of Wild Rescue NPO for the incredible day and the work they do by rescuing indigenous plants and looking after these precious tortoises and monkeys. It was a fantastic experience to walk among "forests" of pin cushion proteas and natural fynbos!

Wild Rescue NPO rescue welcomes visitors, nature groups, school groups, scientists and also has self catering accommodation. It really is worth a visit!

A part of the Stillwater Kids programme involves equine therapy sessions and are extremely valuable.

Equine therapy for children is structured and guided interactions with horses to improve mental, physical, and emotional health. It benefits children with autism, ADHD, trauma, and anxiety by:

🔅 fostering trust,
🔅 enhancing social skills,
🔅 improving emotional regulation,
🔅 and boosting self-esteem.

Equine therapy sessions, often feel safer and less clinical than traditional therapy for children.

The areas of impact:

🐴 Mental Health & Emotion Regulation:
Horses act as mirrors, reacting to a child's emotions, which helps children develop self-control, empathy, and social awareness. It is used to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

🐴 Social Skills Development:
It helps socially isolated, traumatised or withdrawn children by providing a safe, non-judgmental partner for communication.

🐴 Confidence Boost:
Caring for and leading a large animal increases a child's sense of capability and autonomy.

We're on a mission to empower underprivileged kids (ages 7-11) from underprivileged backgrounds with fun social activities, water sports, mental wellness support, and life skills guidance.🤗

This year-long program fights drug abuse, abuse and crime at the root - by healing childhood trauma and breaking negative cycles.

Registered NPO Stillwater Kids was started in 2023 right here in Stilbaai, Western Cape and we meet monthly on Saturdays:

🏊‍♂️ Summer: Paddle- & swimming lessons
⚽ Winter: Beach sports & motivational talks

Our Saturday sessions have two key parts:

⚽️ Thrilling sports & games
🌀 Targeted mental wellness sessions
➕ Plus, every child gets a nutritious meal! 🥗

The second part of the program is weekly tension & trauma therapy sessions and equine therapy.

Trauma (mental, physical, emotional), ACE’s (Adverse Childhood experiences) and chronic stress – all of which can be found in underprivileged children - lead to dysregulated nervous systems and keep them stuck in states of survival. It can be debilitating.
This can have profound effects on their lives.

They can develop adaptive strategies and addictions like drugs, alcohol, food and s*x to bring relief. It can keep them from connecting to others.

Kaiser and CDC studied 17,000 patients with ACEs to assess long-term health and wellness outcomes.

Developmental and relational traumas encompass experiences such as:

- Abuse
- Neglect
- Absence of safety during childhood
- Prolonged exposure to toxic stress
- Adverse community environments including poverty, violence, and discrimination

Individuals with four or more ACEs demonstrated significantly increased risks for the following health outcomes:

🔹Heart disease: 240% higher risk
🔹Cancer: 190% higher risk
🔹Drug abuse: 1030% higher risk
🔹Stroke: 240% higher risk
🔹Diabetes: 160% higher risk
🔹Suicide attempt: 1120% higher risk
🔹Obesity: 160% higher risk
🔹Depression: 460% higher risk

Those reporting six or more ACEs may experience a reduction in life expectancy by approximately 20 years.

Scary and shocking statistics which Stillwater Kids take extremely seriously and it is our mission to offer the correct mental health interventions to the children in our programme.
