🌍🪱 Happy World Earthworm Day! 🪱🌍

Today we celebrate the unsung heroes of the soil — earthworms! These tiny powerhouses are vital for healthy ecosystems: they aerate the soil, boost drainage, and recycle nutrients that help plants grow. 🌱 This day honours Charles Darwin, who revealed their ecological importance in his 1881 book “The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Actions of Worms.”

Earthworms are also the champions of composting! ♻️ Through composting, they transform organic waste (food scraps and garden waste) into rich, fertile compost.

Benefits of compost include:
🌾 Growing your own food and flowers, promoting circular and sustainable living
🌿 Enriching soil with natural nutrients for healthier plants
💧 Improving soil structure and water retention
🌍 Reducing municipal waste collection, leading to economic savings through lower handling and transport costs, and reducing emissions from waste trucks

Sustainability and climate action are at the heart of Dreamcatcher South Africa NPC. We are committed to supporting composting in communities. In 2010, we installed the first Green Johanna composters in Africa at Dreamcatcher tourism service enterprises. Green Johannas are enclosed composting units, ideally suited to South African conditions, and designed to handle food waste (including meat and fish), garden waste, and paper or cardboard.

Due to the success of the project and the continued low rates of composting in South Africa—combined with the growing impacts of climate change—we collaborated with Great Green Systems Ltd to acquire a batch of Green Johannas for distribution in Melkhoutfontein and Stilbaai at subsidised rates in 2024.

In Melkhoutfontein, we have tracked the impact of home composting over the past six months in a sample of 16 households. On average, each household composts about 3 kg of food waste per week, primarily vegetable and fruit peels, bones, and food scraps. Composting levels increase by around 25% during holiday periods. Garden waste, paper, and cardboard are also added to balance the compost. Participants report that they are reducing the amount of waste they put out for collection, preventing scavenging by dogs and seagulls, and saving money by buying fewer rubbish bags — all while producing free compost!

We are planning a similar follow-up study in Stilbaai starting November 2025.

Do the right thing … compost, keep worms busy, join the Goukou Waste Warriors !

Over the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from Belgium 🇧🇪 to Melkhoutfontein 🇿🇦. In line with our ‘Go Truly Local’™ ethos, they immersed themselves in the local community — including supporting Seagulls Rugbyclub at their rugby matches 🏉. Accompanied by Dreamcatcher Kamammas, they enjoyed a wonderful and memorable experience. A heartfelt thank you to Seagulls Rugbyclub and their supporters for the warm welcome!

It’s Tourism Month and this year’s theme is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”!

Dreamcatcher South Africa is about more than tourism — it’s about connection, empowerment, and building a brighter future together.

Our human-centred, collaborative approach helps women and youth run innovative enterprises — from Homestay- and CookUp with Kamamma™ experiences and WalkAbout™ tours to waste-to-craft Made in Melkhoutfontein™ initiatives. These ventures generate income, build skills, and drive sustainable community growth.

Recently, 15 Dreamcatcher enterprises welcomed visitors from the Netherlands, Belgium, the USA, and the UK to communities including Melkhoutfontein (Stilbaai), Darling, !Khwa ttu San, and Kayamandi (Stellenbosch), where they experienced South Africa’s culture, hospitality, and natural beauty — and more visitors are on their way!

Tourism can be transformative, and Dreamcatcher’s 30-year legacy demonstrates it! We are humble and very proud of our tourism enterprises.

♻️🌍 International Zero Waste Week meets Tourism Month in South Africa!

This week is International Zero Waste Week, encouraging us to reduce waste, reuse resources, and live sustainably. It coincides with Tourism Month in South Africa under the theme ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’ — a reminder that tourism is more than just travel. It’s a driver of inclusive growth, responsible exploration, and community empowerment.

At Dreamcatcher South Africa, responsible tourism and waste management has been at the ❤️ of our mission for decades. We’ve fought against harmful dumpsites and open burning, which damage health, harm the environment, and limit tourism opportunities.

🚨 The Waste Crisis in South Africa

But South Africa faces a waste crisis. Waste sites must be licensed, yet a government research has revealed only 16% landfill sites were fully compliant with their license, with 60% non-compliant. AfriForum's report released this week confirmed the scale of the landfill problem with only 22% of 169 sites met the minimum standards. We can — and must — do better.

💡 Turning Waste into Opportunity

Since 2009, we’ve convened and actively participated in waste working groups in Melkhoutfontein and surrounds to drive awareness and action. Our efforts straddling tourism and sustainability are globally recognised – we are proud past recipients of the African Tourism Leadership Forum Championing Sustainability Award.

Examples of collaboration include:

🌍 2018/19: With the University of Brighton (UK) & Junkanew, we trained local crafters to transform waste into products. Many are still thriving today under the ‘Made in Melkhoutfontein’™ brand — and our work even featured in The Re-Use Atlas by renowned architect Duncan Baker-Brown!

📖 2022/23: Co-designed the Community Waste Action Plan for the wider Stilbaai area - underpinned by Dreamcatcher research including a policy review, stakeholder engagement workshops, and 339 household and business surveys. The plan sets out 19 Actions including addressing data gaps, solutions for organic waste, increasing recycling participation and behaviour change.

♻️ 2024: Worked with Henque Waste, who provide recycling services to the area, to collect the most comprehensive recycling data yet on recycling behaviour, monitoring 3,500+ households & businesses.

🌱 2024: With the support of Great Green Systems Ltd procured and facilitated a shipment of Green Johanna composting units from the UK for residents to purchase and some have been sponsored for distribution. Our work since 2010 shows these units—designed to handle most food waste (including meat, fish, and processed food), garden waste, and paper, are well suited to South African conditions. All our tourism enterprises are leading the way composting their organic waste to grow food.

We are measuring the impact of Green Johannas on diverting waste from landfill – Watch out for a follow-up post!.

🙌 Local Heroes & Global Support

We salute the S M & J Community Waste Working Group, Henque Waste, Stilbaai Coastal CleanUp, Anti-Mors Jors, and Goukou Waste Warriors for their tireless local action.

We’re also grateful for the support for the past 15 years of Dr. Ryan Woodard. Ryan is a global waste expert, and was recently commissioned to author the UK Chartered Institution of Wastes Management Presidential Report which was released at the House of Commons in July highlighting opportunities to recover important resources being wasted. In it, he even highlighted the Stilbaai Shell Middens as early examples of humanity’s relationship with waste!

🌸 What Better Day to Reconnect! 🌸

At Dreamcatcher South Africa we’ve been very busy with our passion — working in communities. With Women’s Month closing yesterday and Tourism Month and Heritage Month both starting today, this feels like the perfect moment to share updates from the Dreamcatcher world.

But first… do you know the powerful story behind South African Women’s Month?

On 9 August 1956, more than 20,000 women of all races and backgrounds marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, protesting apartheid’s extension of pass laws to Black women. They carried a petition with over 100,000 signatures, stood in silence for 30 minutes — and then sang the now-iconic words:

✨ “Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo!”
(“You strike a woman, you strike a rock!”)

The march became a lasting symbol of unity, courage, and women’s leadership in shaping South Africa’s future.

'Women’s Month' celebrates the continuing role of women in building a free, inclusive, and thriving society. This year’s 'Women’s Month' theme, “Building Resilient Economies for All,” is at the very heart of Dreamcatcher’s work since our founding over three decades ago. As we step into 'Tourism Month', we continue this journey with the Dreamcatcher Kamamma enterprises:

✨ Welcoming international guests into their communities and Homestays
✨ Sharing vibrant Cook-Ups and storytelling around the table
✨ Leading community walkabouts, celebrating culture, heritage & resilience

The Dreamcatcher family is a network of enterprises, board members, supporters, and volunteers — all working together for local economic growth, environmental protection, and community development. This image captures some of the amazing women who have played a pivotal role in our journey.

🎉 Today, we honour and celebrate the Dreamcatcher family including those who are sadly no longer with us, and those across the world who have supported us through thick and thin!

👀 Keep an eye out this Tourism Month and Heritage Month as we share updates on our recent activities and community impact.
