Sergeant Quinton Cloete, the police officer accused of fatally running over his girlfriend, Farren Maarman (27), in Garies early this month, has been granted bail of R3,000 today, 22 October 2026.
Cloete faces charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified of the incident.
The court did not uphold a petition containing 1,600 signatures opposing his release, handed over by Maarman’s family last Thursday, 15 October 2026.
The decision sparked outrage among community members gathered outside the courthouse in solidarity with the family and their fight against gender-based violence.
