Focus on iThemba is a registered NPO operating in Hillcrest, KZN and Knysna, Western Cape. Partner with us as we Grow Hearts and Minds.

We are committed to making a meaningful difference by advancing quality education and fostering development in the lives of children and the communities we serve. We focus on facilitating quality Early Childhood Development to our partner Pre-Schools in KwaZulu-Natal and Knysna through power collaborations with accredited training, education and nutrition organisations. We also facilitate a donor-

funded Scholarship Programme where boys and girls of our partner Pre-Schools who demonstrate strong academic qualities are selected to attend Waterfall Schools from Grade 0000.

What a privilege it is to be part of a child’s first encounters with books. 📚

On International Literacy Day, we are especially grateful for the opportunity we have to place stories in little hands and help nurture an early love of reading.

Sometimes it begins with sitting together and sharing a story. Sometimes it is giving a child the freedom to choose the book that catches their eye, turning the pages together, talking about the pictures, wondering what might happen next and allowing their imagination to wander.

These may feel like small moments, but they are opening something much bigger.
Through books, children discover new words, new ideas and new ways of seeing the world. Their curiosity grows, their confidence develops and, little by little, a whole world of learning and possibility begins to open.

At Focus on iThemba, we never take for granted the privilege of being able to create these opportunities for the children we serve. It is one of the many ways we are able to keep growing hearts and minds, one story at a time. 💙📖

Safe, nurturing learning spaces are built with care, knowledge and preparation. 💙

Over the next few weeks, 22 ladies from our partner pre-schools will be attending First Aid Training, facilitated by MSL.

This in-depth course will help equip teachers with a stronger understanding of the fundamental principles and practices of basic first aid.

When working with young children, this knowledge is so important. It helps teachers feel more confident, supports health and safety in the classroom, and contributes to learning environments where children can feel cared for and secure.

We are grateful for opportunities like this, where practical training helps strengthen our partner pre-schools and supports the wellbeing of the children they serve each day. 🌱

Some of the most meaningful connections are built simply by spending time together. ❤️

Waterfall Preparatory recently welcomed Grade RR children from our partner pre-schools, Project Bright and Project Delight, for a very special morning of sport, movement, laughter and friendship.

Led by children from the Foundation Phase, the morning was thoughtfully planned to give our little visitors the opportunity to enjoy new activities, explore the campus and, most importantly, spend time with children with whom a special relationship has already begun to grow.

What made the day especially meaningful was seeing the growing connection between Waterfall Preparatory and the communities we serve come to life in such a simple and joyful way.

We are deeply grateful for the thought, care and intention that went into creating this experience for our partner pre-schools. Days like these remind us that meaningful partnership is built through relationship - by opening our spaces, sharing experiences and giving children opportunities to learn from one another.

And sometimes, it looks a lot like beanbags, races and plenty of laughter. 🧡

Our new sports socks have arrived, and we absolutely love them.

At Focus on iThemba, hope is at the heart of who we are. In fact, “iThemba” means “hope” in isiZulu, so it felt only right that these socks carry a message that means so much to us:

It is a simple reminder that even the smallest steps can be part of something meaningful.

Through education, teacher development and family strengthening, we continue to steward hope in ways that help children grow, communities flourish and brighter futures take shape.

What a beautiful example of creativity, generosity and purpose coming together. 💙
We are so grateful to Crawford International La Lucia for their incredible donation of handmade educational toys, lovingly created from recycled materials.

This special initiative involved children from Grades 1 to 12 and resulted in an amazing 20 boxes of resources being collected and shared.

There was such joy in going through each item and seeing the thought, effort and care that had gone into creating resources that can support learning through play.

Even more special was the opportunity to deliver them to our partner pre-schools, where they were received with so much excitement and gratitude.

These handmade toys are more than donated materials. They are tools for imagination, problem-solving, creativity and connection in the classroom.

Thank you to Crawford International La Lucia for your continued partnership and generosity, and to every hand and heart that helped make this initiative possible.

Our two Grade 12 scholars are nearing the end of their high school journey!
Currently in the middle of writing their trials, these two young and capable women are working hard as they prepare for their final exams later this year.
We recently had the opportunity to meet with them, wish them well for their exams and remind them that they are not walking this journey alone. We believe in them, we are proud of how far they have come, and we will continue to support and encourage them every step of the way.
As they enter this final stretch, we’re cheering them on and praying that they approach each exam with confidence, courage and a reminder of just how capable they are.
Keep going, girls. We believe in you!

This Women’s Month, we are celebrating some of the remarkable women who make hope tangible every day. 💙

Today, we honour Megan, Principal of Bongani Pre-School, whose leadership is rooted in both classroom experience and a deep understanding of early childhood development.

While leading the school, Megan also serves as Bongani’s Grade R teacher - bringing her knowledge, insight and care directly into the classroom each day.

This gives her a unique perspective as both a leader and an educator. She understands the little moments that shape a child’s confidence, curiosity and readiness to keep learning.

Through her role, Megan continues to guide children, support her school community and help create a nurturing space where young learners can grow with confidence and hope.

When teachers are given opportunities to grow, the children in their classrooms benefit every day. 💙

This week, 22 teachers from our ECD schools attended a practical workshop hosted by Tanya Patten, our Early Learning Specialist, together with Frances Nair, a Grade R teacher at Waterfall Prep.

Together, Tanya and Frances shared practical knowledge based on their own classroom experience, as well as the insight they have gained over many years of working with young children.

Over the next two weeks, these teachers will be learning more about how to facilitate constructive and engaging morning rings - those important early moments in the school day where children are welcomed, included and gently guided into learning.

Morning rings may seem simple, but when they are done with intention, they can create beautiful opportunities for connection, participation, language development, confidence and routine.

Through shared ideas, observation, practical experience and fresh approaches, this workshop will help equip our teachers with new tools they can take back into their own classrooms.

We are so grateful for opportunities like this, where knowledge is shared generously and teachers are empowered to keep growing for the children they serve. 🌱

It is always a privilege to witness growth on our beloved iThemba Campus. 💙

We are excited to share in this next chapter with Waterfall College, as continued development on Campus opens new doors of opportunity for children, families and the wider school community.

Every step of growth reminds us that this work is about so much more than buildings. It is about stewarding spaces where learning can flourish, relationships can deepen and young lives can continue to be shaped with hope and purpose.
