The Overstrand Conservation Foundation (OCF), now trading as Whale Coast Conservation, was established in 2002.

Fernkloof Hike : 16 October 2026

Whale Coast Conservation conducted an educational excursion to Fernkloof Nature Reserve for 20 learners of Gansbaai Primer. The excursion aimed to expose learners to the natural environment and teach them about the unique biodiversity of the reserve, with a particular focus on fynbos vegetation, pollinators, indigenous trees, and the effects of flooding on the natural landscape.

From the rocky shores of Betty’s Bay to other breeding sites along the Western Cape coast, African Penguins are an important part of our coastal biodiversity. However, their numbers have declined at an alarming rate, making the protection of their breeding colonies and the marine environment they depend on more important than ever.

A shortage of food poses a serious challenge, alongside climate change, and disturbance at breeding colonies which adds further pressure to an already vulnerable species.

Protecting African Penguins means safeguarding their breeding sites, reducing disturbance at nesting colonies, improving access to food and supporting the research and conservation efforts needed to help populations recover.

At CapeNature, we work alongside conservation partners to protect important coastal habitats, including the Stony Point penguin colony. The future of the African Penguin depends on the choices we make today. By protecting their habitats and the marine environments they rely on, we can help give these endangered seabirds a fighting chance to recover and thrive along our coastline.

🌿💚 Stanford MillStream Clean-Up : 7 October 2026! 💚🌿

Whale Coast Conservation joined hands with Grade 5 learners from Die Bron Primary School for a clean-up at Stanford MillStream as part of our ICC 2026 clean-up campaigns! 🧤🗑️ The learners worked in teams to collect litter and help protect the stream and the wildlife that depend on it, including fish and frogs. 🐟🐸 It was a fun and meaningful outdoor experience that reminded us all that every small action makes a difference in protecting our environment. A big thank you to Overberg District Municipality and AVI Community Trust for making this possible! 🌍💚

October is Firefly time. We are holding thumbs that we will be able to guide nature lovers to see the fireflies in Fernkloof again during October. This walk is dependent on so many variables: Are there any fireflies left after the floods earlier this year? If they are there, where will we see them? When will the short mating season start (it varies according to the recent climate)? What are the weather prospects during the season (they don’t like cold, wind or rain)? In other words, what will be the date of the guided walk? We won’t know more than a few days in advance.
So, if you would like to join us on this exclusive adventure (by special permission to be in the reserve after dark) send your name, the number of people in your party and your contact details to [email protected] or WhatsApp 083 242 3295. You will be added to our list and be informed of the date when we know they are our and the weather is right.
Adults pay R250 and children (6 and older) pay R125. Proceeds go to chameleon rescue efforts
