SUCCESSFUL ARREST - GREAT TEAMWORK!

Thanks to information received from the public, a speedy response by our OVSRA Control Room, and assistance from the Hermanus Public Protection controller, two suspects who broke into a garage in Onrus were successfully tracked down.

Due to the determination of Lourens Theron from Hermanus Neighbourhood Watch and Jason Botes Fidelity Adt Guarding Manager, the suspects were apprehended and then subsequently arrested by the South African Police Service.

It has now been confirmed that the suspects were also wanted in connection with other cases.

This is what happens when community, SRAs, neighbourhood watches, private security and SAPS work together. Thank you to everyone involved for keeping our area safe ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Please continue to report any suspicious activity to our control room.

RECYCLING FOR A BEAUTIFUL WORLD

Each and every one of us can make a real difference in our community, and for the environment - by ensuring it is well-managed for future generations to enjoy.

It takes just a few minutes each day to master the clear bag system. Here is your quick guide to recycling correctly from the Overstrand Municipality:

ONRUS RIVER COMMUNITY PROJECT

This morning's removal of 240 young trees will have a significant impact in the long run, because these invasive species are notorious water-depleters.

Every bit counts!

Thank you to Miranda Kruger for organising these important expeditions with our enviro-patrollers, and to Fidelity ADT for arranging their transport ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

What a lovely, busy day for our enviro-patrollers ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

They started the morning by joining our community cleanup at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and the R43. Our GM and six community members joined in and together they cleared out 25 big bags of rubbish from the bushy area. A big thank you to everyone who came out!

From there, Tandinkosi and Yandisa headed straight to work with the Sugarbird Project and OREF Onrus River Estuary Forum in a collaborative project to clear alien invasive vegetation along the banks of the Onrus River Estuary.

Then, after some lunch, it was back to the office to grab their bicycles, and off they went on their normal neighbourhood patrols, with some foot patrols along the coastal path thrown in for good measure.

All-in-all another fulfilling dayโ€™s work keeping Onrus and Vermont clean, green and safe ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธ

A huge thank you to our patrollers and to every community member who joined in today. This is why we always say that we are stronger together!

Thank you to Snymans Incorporated for our trusty NP200, and we are very grateful to Overstrand Municipality for their speedy removal of the pile of bags ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿšจ Have you ever been a victim of an online scam, hacking, or cyber harassment?

โœ…๏ธ It is important that you are aware of your rights, and know what to do.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธUnder the Cybercrimes Act, South African police stations MUST help you. They cannot turn you away or refer you to another station, even if the crime happened elsewhere.

When you report a cybercrime, the officer must:

1. Interview you ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
2. Take down an affidavit ๐Ÿ“
3. Open a case docket ๐Ÿ“
4. Register the case on the system

๐Ÿ”’ Whether it is cyber fraud, extortion, or the sharing of intimate images without consent, your local station is required by law to assist you immediately.

โœ…๏ธ Stay alert - learn about the various ways criminals may try to catch you out, and don't become a victim of cybercrime!

INVASIVE ALIEN PLANT CONTROL

Invasive alien plants are a significant threat to South Africa's biodiversity. These plants outcompete indigenous vegetation for water, nutrients and light, spreading rapidly and leading to a decline in biodiversity and ecosystem health.

The Western Cape is susceptible to alien plant invasions due to its Mediterranean climate and proximity to urban areas. Some examples of the most problematic plant species in the Western Cape include rooikrans, Port Jackson, black wattle, pine and gum species.

Riverine areas in the Western Cape are particularly vulnerable to the invasion of alien plant species, resulting in severe consequences such as:

โ€ข Reduced water quality and quantity
โ€ข Loss of biodiversity and ecosystem health
โ€ข Increased soil erosion and sedimentation
โ€ข Altered fire regimes, and catastrophic fires
โ€ข Negative impacts on agriculture, forestry, and tourism

As part of our environmental programme, the Onrus Vermont SRA enviro-patrollers assist with a project spear-headed by Onrus resident, Miranda Middel Kruger, to systematically clear some areas of the banks of the Onrus River of alien vegetation. This morning's efforts resulted in a haul of 112 rooikrans, 71 blue gum and 78 pines!

Thank you to Fidelity ADT for transporting our team ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ
