Meet Phakama, a poultry farmer from Pearly Beach.

After graduating from Grootbos Foundation’s entrepreneurship programme, Phakama turned her love for chickens into a growing small business. She sells freshly laid eggs to customers in Pearly Beach and Masakhane, and chicken manure to local farmers, who use it as a natural fertiliser.

Phakama takes great pride in keeping her hens happy and healthy, supplementing their diet with medicinal plants that she grows herself.

While bees often steal the spotlight, flies are also one of nature's hardest-working pollinators.
A Grootbos guide recently spotted something remarkable. In less than 20 minutes, five different fly species visited a single yellow daisy, feasting on its nectar and then carrying its pollen from flower to flower.

It is a wonderful reminder that even the most annoying creatures have an important role in nature.
