Whale Coast Cetacean Project

Whale Coast Cetacean Project This PhD study is the first of its kind in South Africa. This project has been developed as a Ph.D. The scientific team consists of Ph.D. student M.Sc.

The Whale Coast Cetacean Project aims to gain a thorough understanding of how whales and dolphins use the study area in the hope that this knowledge will be used to develop an adequate conservation plan for this precious and unique place. The project implements the combined methods of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), theodolite tracking and the establishment of an archived long term (11yr) datab

ase of opportunistic observation data from the Dyer Island Cruises whale watching vessel “The Whale Whisperer”. The aim is to obtain a baseline of distribution, habitat and behaviour of whale and dolphin species in the Pearly Beach to De Kelders area of the Cape Whale Coast. study with the University of Pretoria’s Mammal Research Institute (MRI) and Statens Serum Insitut, Copenhagen (SSI). Katja Vinding Petersen, Professor Marthan Bester, Dr. Simon Elwen and Ms. Meredith Thornton of the MRI. Dr Steve Kirkman of the Department of Environmental Affairs.
