What an incredible VRCID Youth Day!

A huge thank you to the more than 500 young people who joined us for the 2026 VRCID Youth Sports Day. From soccer and netball to tug-of-war, the day was filled with teamwork, sportsmanship, fun, and new friendships.

This event is about more than sport - it's about creating opportunities for young people to connect, and thrive in a safe and positive environment.

A sincere appreciation to our sponsors: Bellville CPF, Bellville SAPS, the Somali Association of South Africa, Scalabrini Centre, Shop2Shop, Kazang, Bellville SAPS Sports Club, the City of Cape Town, Red Bull, Falke, Securitas, and Rhobot Shop. Your support played a vital role in making the day possible.

A special thank you to the medical team on standby behind the scenes, every cook who helped prepare food for the day, and every volunteer who generously gave their time and energy to make the event a success.

Most importantly, thank you to every participant who came out to play, compete, and celebrate with us. We look forward to seeing this initiative continue to grow. May the power of sport continue to break barriers, build bridges, and create opportunities for our youth.

As we celebrate Youth Month, we are proud to share a story of growth, determination, and opportunity.

In July last year, Ayabulela Mzamane joined the VRCID for work experience after graduating from the Chrysalis Academy, Tokai. During his time with us, he demonstrated exceptional commitment and a willingness to learn, obtaining his school qualifications, his driver’s license, and proving himself to be a valuable member of the team.

Today, Ayabulela has secured a permanent position with Securitas.

At a time when youth unemployment remains one of South Africa’s greatest challenges, partnerships with organisations such as Chrysalis Academy Tokai play a vital role in creating opportunities for young people to gain experience, develop skills, and build meaningful careers.

Congratulations, Ayabulela. Thank you for your contribution to the VRCID. We wish you every success for the future and look forward to watching you continue to grow, achieve, and win in life.

Another successful intervention by the VRCID Public Safety team in Louis Trichardt Street, Parow.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, VRCID CCTV Operator Sipuka observed suspicious activity in the Louis Trichardt Street area and alerted responding officers. VRCID Public Safety Officers Mali, Thomsana, Jonkers, and Ngxato responded swiftly and apprehended two suspects found in possession of suspected stolen property.

Further investigation led officers to the rightful owner, who confirmed that the property belonged to him and elected to open a case. The suspects were subsequently handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing.

This incident demonstrates the value of proactive CCTV monitoring, visible patrols, and rapid response in hotspot areas throughout the VRCID. Our teams remain committed to maintaining a strong presence across the corridor, including areas such as Louis Trichardt Street, where ongoing patrols and monitoring continue to assist in the prevention of crime.

🚨 A reminder to all victims of crime: Please ensure that cases are reported to SAPS. Opening a case not only assists investigations and prosecutions but also helps authorities identify crime trends and allocate resources where they are needed most.

Thank you Team Farao for your vigilance and dedication.

Keeping the VRCID area clean, safe, and welcoming is a daily commitment, and our VRCID Cleaning Teams continue to deliver, no matter the challenge.

Throughout May, the VRCID Urban Management teams worked tirelessly to remove litter, clear illegal dumping, clean stormwater drains, maintain public spaces, remove graffiti, and respond to cleanliness concerns across the precinct.

Illegal dumping remains a major challenge in the area, but our teams continue to respond quickly and consistently to keep public spaces accessible, well-maintained, and inviting for residents, businesses, commuters, and visitors.

A sincere thank you to every member of the VRCID Urban Management and Cleaning teams for their hard work, dedication, and pride in keeping the VRCID area looking its best every day.

Another successful intervention through vigilance, technology, and rapid response.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, VRCID CCTV Operator Matshange observed suspicious activity in Klosser Alley, Parow, where a male was seen removing a battery from a drain. VRCID Public Safety Officers Madikane and April were immediately dispatched to investigate.

Following swift action by the responding officers, the battery was recovered, CCTV footage was secured as evidence, and the suspect was arrested and charged by Parow SAPS for possession of stolen goods out of a motor vehicle.

This incident highlights the effectiveness of VRCID’s integrated approach to public safety, where dedicated CCTV operators and Public Safety Officers work together to identify suspicious activity, recover stolen property, and assist SAPS in bringing offenders to justice.

Another dangerous weapon removed from our streets by the VRCID.

While conducting patrols in Strand Street, Bellville, on Monday evening, VRCID Public Safety Officers identified and approached a suspicious individual for questioning. The suspect fled on foot but was swiftly apprehended by the officers.

A search revealed a knife and an imitation firearm in the suspect’s possession. SAPS responded to the scene, and the suspect, along with both weapons, was handed over for further processing.

Every dangerous weapon removed from the streets is one less potential threat to our community. Through visible policing, rapid response, and strong partnerships with SAPS, we remain committed to creating a safer and more secure environment for everyone who lives, works, travels, and does business in the area.

Behind every interaction is a person needing support, guidance, or access to services.

During May 2026, the VRCID Social Development Team recorded 1,382 interactions across the VRCID area. A significant increase in engagements was driven by focused outreach efforts, including visits to one of the area's larger homeless encampments, a dedicated after-hours outreach operation to hotspot locations, and a special winter awareness drive.

With winter approaching, our team actively engaged with as many homeless individuals as possible to ensure they were aware of the sleeping sites and support services available through MES and other partner organisations. The goal is simple: to make sure that no one is left unaware of the assistance available to them during the colder months.

By being present on the streets, building relationships, and connecting people with services, the team continues to provide practical support while creating pathways towards dignity, safety, and hope.

On the ground. Every day, rain or sunshine. These photos capture just a small part of Tuesday’s social fieldwork across the VRCID.

Through ongoing engagement and relationship-building, our Social Development team was able to assist with two shelter placements and continued encouraging vulnerable individuals to make use of available winter sleeping sites as colder weather approaches.

Fieldwork is not a once-off intervention. It happens daily - meeting people where they are, offering support, building trust, and creating pathways towards safety, shelter, and hope.
