I remember that summer.
The heat beneath the shade trees.
Sunday picnics and neighbors gathered on the lawn.

Children playing while the grown folks talked in voices they thought we couldn’t hear.

Back then, Maycomb was simply home.

I didn’t understand all that was happening around us. I didn’t know that one summer could change the way you saw your neighbors, your father—and the world.

But looking back, I remember.

Some childhood summers fade with time.
That summer never did.

Sunday afternoon means the whole town seems to find its way beneath the shade trees.

Calpurnia is keeping an eye on the children. Helen Robinson and her family enjoy a little time together. Miss Maudie and Miss Stephanie have settled in for conversation—and probably a little town gossip. Reverend Sykes, Heck Tate, Judge Taylor, Nathan Radley and familiar Maycomb faces mingle nearby.
The children laugh. The grown folks talk. Someone brought something to eat. And everybody knows everybody—or at least thinks they do.

For one afternoon, it’s simply Maycomb being Maycomb.

But every face in this little town has a part to play in the story ahead.

Summer days were made for imagination.

For games under the trees, dolls tucked under little arms, whispered secrets, made-up stories, and the occasional disagreement when somebody decided they were in charge.

Before the courtroom.
Before the hard lessons.
Before Maycomb became more complicated than a child could understand.

There was simply summer—and children being children.

These are the little moments that make the world of To Kill a Mockingbird feel alive: friendship, mischief, imagination, and innocence before growing up changes everything.

Some summer afternoons were made for shade trees, picnic blankets, and getting a good talking-to from Calpurnia.

Scout and Jem may have thought summer meant freedom—but Calpurnia was never too far away to make sure they remembered their manners. 😂

These quieter moments help bring Maycomb to life before the courtroom doors open and childhood begins to look a little different.
