A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center A Safe Place provides housing, court advocacy, referrals and comprehensive counseling programs for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.

We are available 24-7, 365 at 800-600-SAFE. Help Line: (847) 249-4450 or (800) 600-SAFE
A Safe Place provides emergency shelter, affordable housing, advocacy, and individual and group supportive services to individuals experiencing domestic violence and/or human trafficking and their children; intervention services for abusers to learn accountability for their choices and actions; and education programs to build awareness of domestic violence and human trafficking among professionals who encounter survivors and abusers, students in classrooms, and the community-at-large. Our mission-focused work is guided by our philosophy. A Safe Place operates with these beliefs:
Everyone has the right to a violence-free, safe and healthy life. Domestic Violence is a crime defined in the Illinois Domestic Violence Act. Eliminating sex role stereotyping leads to a society that equally values each individual. Violence in intimate relationships is a chosen behavior to exert power and control over another. Violence can be a learned behavior. Through intervention and treatment, alternatives to abusive behavior also can be learned. Children from violent homes experience trauma, suffer psychologically, physically, emotionally and socially. A Safe Place recognizes child witnesses as primary victims of domestic violence. Early intervention, prevention education, domestic violence education, and community awareness can interrupt the intergenerational cycle of violence and reduce the social acceptance of domestic violence. Survivors are traumatized, suffer from low self-esteem and have limited access to resources; all of which keep them trapped in violent relationships. With safety, counseling, and supportive services, survivors of domestic violence experience healing and empowerment, and decide for themselves to live free of violence. A Safe Place must address domestic violence on a local, state, and national level. Legislative and institutional mandates and appropriate responses by police, prosecutors and judges are essential in eliminating domestic violence. Every individual in our community must become more aware of how to prevent, intervene and be less tolerant of domestic violence. Our society must hold individuals responsible for their abusive behavior. A Safe Place strives to create a community where violence is not tolerated or hidden.

Domestic violence doesn't always stop when someone leaves the room or walks out the door. Technology can become another tool abusers use to monitor, intimidate, threaten, and control their partners.

💜Tracking someone's location through a phone or GPS device.
💜Reading private text messages, emails, or social media accounts.
💜Sending repeated unwanted messages, threats, or intimidating communications.
💜Using spyware or hidden tracking applications to monitor someone's activities.
💜Accessing personal accounts without permission.
💜Using social media to harass, threaten, or humiliate a survivor.

These behaviors can make survivors feel as though they are constantly being watched, leaving them with little sense of privacy or safety.

It is important to understand that abuse can take many forms, and technology can make it even more difficult for survivors to escape an abusive situation.

💜 Everyone deserves privacy, independence, and the freedom to feel safe, both in person and online.

At A Safe Place, we believe every survivor deserves to be heard, supported, and treated with dignity. We provide free, confidential support and resources to help survivors and their children find safety and begin healing. 𝟮𝟰/𝟳 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝟭-𝟴𝟬𝟬-𝟲𝟬𝟬-𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 (𝟳𝟮𝟯𝟯)

Domestic violence can leave deep emotional and psychological scars that extend far beyond the physical abuse. Survivors may experience depression, anxiety, fear, isolation, hopelessness, and feelings of helplessness that can become overwhelming.

Living in an abusive relationship can take away a person's sense of control, confidence, and safety. The ongoing trauma can have serious effects on mental health, sometimes leaving survivors feeling as though there is no way out.

It is important to remember that survivors are not alone, and help is available. Compassion, understanding, counseling, and access to safe resources can make a meaningful difference in someone's recovery.

At A Safe Place, we recognize that healing involves more than finding physical safety. It also means supporting emotional well-being, rebuilding confidence, and helping survivors and their children move forward without fear.

Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, supported, and reminded that their life matters. There is hope, and there is help.

Healing from domestic violence takes time, and every survivor's journey is different. The emotional impact of abuse can last long after the immediate danger has passed. Survivors may struggle with anxiety, depression, fear, loss of confidence, and the challenges of rebuilding their lives.

Counseling can play an important role in the healing process. It provides a safe, supportive environment where survivors can process their experiences, work through trauma, rebuild self-esteem, and develop healthy coping skills.

For children who have witnessed domestic violence, counseling can also help them understand their feelings, build confidence, and develop healthy relationships as they grow.

At A Safe Place, we understand that healing is not a one-size-fits-all process. Through individual, group, and family counseling, we help survivors and their children find support, regain a sense of safety, and move forward at their own pace.

💜 Asking for help is a sign of strength. Every survivor deserves the opportunity to heal, feel supported, and build a future free from abuse.

That's more than 10 million people annually who experience physical violence at the hands of someone they know, love, or once trusted.

Domestic violence can happen in any relationship, regardless of age, gender, s*xual orientation, or background. It doesn't always begin with physical violence. Abuse can start with controlling behaviors, intimidation, emotional manipulation, isolation, or threats and may escalate over time.

Behind every statistic is a person whose life has been affected by abuse. There are families, children, and communities impacted by the lasting effects of domestic violence.

We must continue to recognize the warning signs, speak up when we see concerning behaviors, and create an environment where survivors feel safe reaching out for help without fear of judgment.

💜 No one deserves to be controlled, threatened, intimidated, or physically harmed. Everyone deserves to live a life free from abuse.

The impact of domestic violence extends far beyond the immediate harm experienced by survivors. It creates significant emotional, physical, and financial consequences for individuals, families, communities, and our healthcare system.

Survivors may require emergency medical care, ongoing treatment, mental health counseling, and other healthcare services as a result of abuse. Many also face missed work, lost income, housing instability, and long-term challenges as they work toward rebuilding their lives.

But the true cost of domestic violence cannot be measured in dollars alone. It is measured in lives disrupted, families affected, children exposed to trauma, and survivors who deserve the opportunity to heal and feel safe.

Raising awareness, supporting prevention efforts, and ensuring survivors have access to resources and services are important steps toward creating safer communities.

💜 Domestic violence is not just a personal issue. It is a community issue, and ending it requires all of us.

Domestic violence doesn't just affect the individuals directly involved. It can have a lasting impact on children who witness abuse or live in homes where violence, fear, and control are present.

Even when children are not physically harmed, witnessing domestic violence can affect their emotional well-being, sense of safety, and development. They may experience anxiety, fear, sadness, difficulty trusting others, or challenges forming healthy relationships as they grow older.

Children should never have to worry about their safety or feel caught in the middle of an abusive relationship. Every child deserves to grow up in a home where they feel protected, loved, and secure.

At A Safe Place, we understand that domestic violence affects the entire family. That is why we provide support and resources for survivors and their children, including safe shelter, counseling, advocacy, and services designed to help families heal together.

💜 Breaking the cycle of domestic violence starts with awareness, support, and creating safer futures for our children.
