Green-Hartsfield House c 1806 to be auctioned
A historic home belonging to the former owner of Mitchell’s Mill is due to be auctioned May 7. The Green-Hartsfield house, built c. 1806 at 7404 Halifax Road, Youngsville, and nearly four acres surrounding it is for sale. This home is on the National Register of Historic Places recognizing its architectural and historical significance and was fully restored in 1988 and 2011.
Built by William Green, son of Joseph Green, a Captain and Patriot in the Revolutionary War, the house went through 2 generations of the Hartsfield family, then into the Calvin Mitchell family over 100 years. Once encompassing 245 acres, the property includes an outdoor kitchen and a large barn and was reduced to 150 acres by 1989, when the house was restored under Surry Roberts. Parts of the estate were sold over the years, including a one-half acre burial ground, which now resides in the Calvin’s Mill subdivision adjacent to this property.
The listing states that having this historical designation does not preclude the next owner from razing the existing structure among other uses.
We hope the new owners will save this historic home and respect its place in local history. The listing can be found here.

We honor our past as we turn to the new year and wish everyone a safe and productive 2026!

Jesse Green Bunn Store - Gone for over 80 years, this country store was located on the Southwest corner of Hopkins Crossroads, at the intersection of Hopkins Chapel Road and Fowler Road, about 3 miles north of Zebulon. Jesse operated this from the 1930s until it burned in a fire in the mid to late 1940s. Jesse Green Bunn then opened a second store on Highway 96 directly across the road from the airport. He ran this general goods country store from the late 1940s until he died in January 1955. This store is one of 17 that was featured by Preservation Zebulon at its Zebulation event last month.
