Congratulations to our founder Cindy Nettles Shotwell. Although most of her heart belongs to rescue, she now is enjoying following her tile obsession and has joined the team of Magnolia Mahj! (P.S. they also help support our rescue with fundraisers.) Please go follow their page and sign up for a class with Cindy to learn how to play the game that is sweeping the country, American Mahjong.
🀄️ Her next beginner class is Monday October 19th at Agave Blue in Zachary. See flyer in first comment.
🀄 Magnolia Mahj is growing! Meet our newest instructor, Cindy Shotwell!
We’re excited to officially welcome Cindy Shotwell as a fully affiliated Mahjong Instructor with Magnolia Mahj! With Cindy joining the team, we’ll be able to offer more classes, more open play, and more opportunities to MAHJ!
A Feliciana native, Cindy is a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. After retiring from the legal field, she founded Must Luv Dogs Rescue, which has helped save nearly 1,000 abandoned and neglected dogs.
Cindy was introduced to American Mahjong by her friend and fellow rescue advocate, Liz Ezelle — and, like so many of us, she quickly fell under the spell of the tiles. She loves studying strategy just as much as she loves the friendships that come with the game.
After joining the GBR Bambird Scramble in 2025, Cindy caught the competitive bug, too. In August, she took home 1st place at the 2026 Mississippi Gulf Coast Mahjong Classic — so tournament play has officially been added to her Mahjong addiction!
Cindy already loves sharing the game with others and has taught players in both Louisiana and Michigan, where she frequently visits family.
We’re so excited to have Cindy officially teaching alongside Magnolia Mahj and can’t wait for you to learn and play with her!
And the timing couldn’t be better…
👀 October Mahj 101, Mahj 102 & Open Play dates are coming VERY soon!
More teachers. More availability. More Mahjong.
Stay tuned! 🀄
