Mentorship is prevention.

According to A Future Built on Mentorship, mentored youth are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 54% less likely to be arrested.

These outcomes are powerful evidence of mentorship’s preventive power.

A steady, caring relationship can provide connection, encouragement, accountability, and belonging at moments when those things matter most. Consistent connection helps young people make healthier choices and build healthier futures.

Our Match of the Month is Big Dion and Little Lonnie! With a shared interest in basketball and soccer, they clicked right away. Instead of Dion lecturing Lonnie, they had conversations about healthy habits, staying on top of homework, and thinking ahead about money and how to earn it. Since being matched, Lonnie sees his future differently. He is starting to imagine more than just sports when he thinks about what he might become.

The shift did not happen overnight. It came from Dion showing up week after week. We see Lonnie smiling and laughing during their sessions, feeling comfortable enough to be himself. This is what mentoring is about. Helping young people imagine bigger futures and giving them the support to get there. đź’šThis is proof that it works!

When someone takes a little of their time to listen and encourage a kid, almost anything is possible. You can be that person. Find It Here. Become a Big at bbbssoutheastmi.org/mentor

There is something special about gathering with people who believe in the same thing: every young person deserves someone in their corner.

That has always been at the heart of A Fall Evening with Big Brothers Big Sisters, one of Washtenaw County’s signature evenings in support of youth mentorship.

Join us Sunday, September 13 at the Ann Arbor home of returning hosts Tara and Ethan Linkner as we celebrate this beloved tradition and step together into BBBSSEM’s next chapter.

This year’s evening includes the opportunity to meet Dr. Joselyn Mitchell-Parker and hear more about her vision for BBBSSEM, plus a special presentation of the 2026 Luminary Award honoring Ann Feeney, whose extraordinary leadership and commitment helped light the way for young people in our community.

Come reconnect. Come welcome new faces. Come celebrate what mentorship makes possible.

Mentorship builds stronger economies.

According to A Future Built on Mentorship, mentored youth are 20% more likely to enroll in college and earn an average of $200,000 more over their lifetimes.

Those outcomes reach far beyond one individual. When young people have greater access to opportunity, their increased earning power can strengthen families, communities, and the broader economy.

Investing in mentorship is investing in what comes next.
