Mother Church of Dakota Territory
1861 The first services from the Book of Common Prayer were conducted in Dakota Territory in 1860 by the Reverend Melancthon Hoyt and the Right Reverend Joseph C. Hoyt returned to Yankton, built a log house to accomodate his family and the congregration naming it St. The vestry included men prominent in founding Yankton as the territorial capital an

d organizing the government of Dakota Territory. The House of Represenatives of the first territorial legislature met at St. As Yankton grew, the parish grew. In 1864 it was reorganized and renammed, becoming Christ Church, with a new church building. In 1870 Yankton hosted the first annual convocation of the Episcopal Church in South Dakota. It wasn't long before growth necessitated another move. The present structure has been in continuous use since November 13, 1882. The altar, baptismal font, pulpit, and rood screen reflect the woodworking talent of men in the parish. The altar hangings and kneelers reflect the nimble fingers of the women in the church. Thus Christ Church is the "Mother Church of the Dakotas".

Be safe and stay home!

As of 9 am Sunday, March 15th, the strong winds and snow continue to bring blizzard conditions to most of the region.

Many roads are completely covered with ice and snow, and parts of east central South Dakota and southwest Minnesota are in “Travel Not Advised” status.

Do not travel during this storm unless you absolutely must! Wind gusts of 30-50 mph and limited visibility in blowing snow are too much for plows to keep up with.

Due to the blizzard warning for tomorrow, Sunday March 15th, our Sunday Eucharist is CANCELLED. Please stay home and av...

A Pastoral Note from Bishop Folts:

Dear Ones in Christ:

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

It is my sad duty to inform you that the Rt. Rev. Dr. Craig Anderson, IX Bishop of South Dakota (1984-1992), died this morning. Funeral plans are pending and will be communicated to you once they have been finalized. Please keep Bishop Craig and Liz, his wife, and all the members of the Craig family in your prayers, especially during tomorrow's service.

May Bishop Craig's soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace and rise in glory.

Faithfully,

Bp. Jonathan

Dear Christ Church Family:

We received the news this morning that Jane Kopecky's daughter, Carole (Kopecky), lost her home and pets in a devastating fire last evening while she was working, and we urge your fervent prayers on her behalf. Carole is a California resident and, due to the incredibly high cost of living in that state, was unable to insure her home; thus, she has lost everything except a very few memorabilia items she managed to locate in the ruins. I am asking our church family to step up, as we would and have done for any of our church family and family members, to help us raise funds to support and help Carole work toward rebuilding her life during this very horrific time. While I am fully aware that January is a struggle for many folks with taxes, Christmas bills, and weather-related expenses, I encourage you to be generous in your giving, as a tragedy of this magnitude could happen to anyone at any time. Please submit your contributions in the offering plate (marked for Carole) or mailed to the church post office box (P.O. Box 77) by the end of January. The church will issue a check to Carole at that time.

While money is never a substitute or remedy for the traumatic pain of loss, it enables us as a small faith community to do something small but filled with great love. The particular loss of Carole's dog and cat has caused her a great deal of pain, and many of us with beloved pets can empathetically share that hurt. Thank you for responding to this call and for all the many generous, often unnoticed ways each and every one of you is beautifully caring for our community and each other.

Fr. Mike
