In the 1930s, Gertrude Elion graduated summa cm laude in chemistry and couldn't get a single research job. Not one. Lab after lab turned her away for a single reason: she was a woman. So she took what she could get. Testing pickle acidity. Checking egg yolk color for mayonnaise. Working as a secretary. Anything to stay close to science.

She never stopped fighting for her shot. When she finally got into a lab, she was told to choose between her job and her PhD. She chose the job and changed medicine forever without ever earning that degree.

Working method by method, molecule by molecule, Elion pioneered an entirely new way to design drugs. Her work gave the world the first effective treatment for childhood leukemia. She developed the drug that made organ transplants survivable. She helped create the first successful antiviral medicine. And in her final years, she helped develop AZT the drug that gave AIDS patients hope for the first time.

In 1988, this woman with no PhD stood in Stockholm and accepted the Nobel Prize. America's laboratories, and the world's patients, were never the same.
