Veteran Urban Garden initiative led by Jason Phillips with residents at YWCA Gateway to Independence in Providence.

Virginia "Gini" Duarte was a former East Providence teacher, coach, and a pioneer for girls sports. She was a dear friend of YWCA, whose life was taken due to breast cancer. In her memory, YWCA Rhode Island setup an annual scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding female student athlete from East Providence High School.

On May 27 at their Senior Athletics Banquet - representing the YWCA Board of Directors - Susan Gershkoff, Esq., Ltd. proudly presented this year's scholarship to Trinity Provencher.

Since the age of 3, Trinity has enjoyed and excelled in sports: softball, baseball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and cross country. A direct quote: "we over me, and always stay humble yet hungry."

Congratulations Trinity; we wish you abundant success at Wilmington University!

On that same night from East Providence High School, The Gini Duarte Senior Girls Basketball Player Award was also presented to Trinity.

Representing YWCA Rhode Island at the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans Conference in Washington DC from May 27 - 29, 2026: YWCA Veterans Affairs Director, Michael McRae and YWCA Compliance Case Manager, Sandra Giraldo.

Michael had the great opportunity to connect in-person with Shawn Liu, Director of Communications at the Homeless Programs Office, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The goal of the YWCA Gateway to Independence program is to provide supportive housing and services that help homeless veterans achieve residential stability, improve their skills or income, and gain greater self-determination.
