Participants receive a simple meal in exchange for a cash donation that is given to a local organization whose goal is to fight hunger. Those who donate also receive a handcrafted pottery bowl, made by a local artisan, to take home to remind them of all the empty bowls around the world. This community event will raise money to su

pport South Wood Emergency Pantry Shelf (SWEPS), as well as other local organizations working to combat hunger. The cost is $10 (for age 3 and up) which includes a bowl of soup, bread, dessert, and beverage. The bowls are being donated by local potters and area high school art class students. Soups and bread are donated by local restaurants and businesses. For more information or to volunteer to help serve the meal or visit the Empty Bowls website at www.swcemptybowls.com

Our Story

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots movement to fight hunger. Participants receive a simple meal in exchange for a cash donation that is given to a local organization whose goal is to fight hunger. Those who donate also receive a handcrafted pottery bowl, made by a local artisan, to take home to remind them of all the empty bowls around the world.

South Wood County Empty Bowls was born in the fall of 2012 with the idea presented to the Community Outreach Ministry at First English Lutheran Church by our pastor at the time, who was an amateur potter. He has been in contact with other potters in the area who were donors to other Empty Bowls endeavors in neighboring communities, but were interested in organizing one for the benefit of the citizens of South Wood County. A special committee was organized with FEL and community members, with our first event held in February 2013. Empty Bowls is supported by a wide range of businesses and individuals in our community who generously donate what we need to conduct the meal. Donations of pottery bowls from professional and amateur potters and student art classes and clubs, soup from area restaurants, bread from professional and private bakers, cookies from our congregational members, raffle baskets from area businesses and private donors and other supplies such as placemats, napkins, milk/butter,etc help us keep operating costs to a minimum. To meet operating expenses we cannot get donated, we solicit for cash donations and have been supported by various businesses, union groups, and private citizens. This enables us to give 100% of the funds we bring in for our meal and raffle to organizations in the community that address hunger needs. We partner with the South Wood County Hunger Coalition to identify vulnerable populations. In six years, we have given more than $24,000 to the following organizations: Rapids Family Backpacks, Nekoosa Backpacks for Kids, SWEPS, The Neighborhood Table, The Family Center Food Pantry, Growning Friends Community Gardens, and St Luke’s Lutheran Church Community Thanksgiving Dinner. For more information, to join our planning committee, volunteer to help on our event day, or to make a donation of bowls or cash to assist with general support of this program, please contact us on this page or visit the Empty Bowls website at www.swcemptybowls.com
