"Jesus Prays for You in Advance"

“Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32 (NLT)

Jesus is not surprised by your failures.

He says to Simon Peter in Luke 22:31-32, "Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers" (NLT). This very powerful verse teaches a lot about your failures.

Just as he did with Peter, Jesus knows every failure in your life before it happens. He won’t be surprised at the failures you’ll have this year or any bad decisions you’ll make far in the future. He already knows them. He knows the past, present, and future. He knows everything before it happens. That’s why he also prays for you before your failure happens.

Notice that Jesus says, "when you have repented and turned to me again." He says “when,” not “if.” Jesus already knows that you’ll recover from the sins, mistakes, and bad decisions that you're going to make in the future.

Jesus already knows. And because he knows, he has already prayed for you. He has prayed not just for you to make it through but that you would repent from your sin and then—the last part of this verse—strengthen the other disciples.

Jesus wants you to help others as you learn from your mistakes. Part of God's dream for your life is to take the lessons of your mistakes and help somebody else.

The same four things Jesus says to Peter he is also saying to you: "I know every mistake you're going to make in life, and I've already prayed for them. Because of that, I know you're going to come back to me. Then, when you come back, I want you to help other people."

That's good news. It means that, ultimately, you can't destroy your life if you’ve given it to God, because he is going to work it all out. What a comfort!

Everyone has failures. But how you respond to failure can set you apart. As a follower of Jesus, repent of your sin; then encourage other believers in their faith, showing them how to be obedient to God’s ord.

Talk It Over
Even though Jesus knows ahead of time that you’re going to repent, why is the process of repentance still so important?

Does it comfort and encourage you to know that Jesus prays for you? Why or why not?

What failures to obey God do you need to repent of today? How will you use your experience of God’s grace to help others?

God offers second chances
No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, God offers you a second chance. He knows everything you’ve ever done wrong, every failure you’ve experienced, and he still loves you and cares for you.

He doesn’t expect you to earn your way into his good graces; we are saved by God’s gift of grace when we place our faith in his Son, Jesus Christ. If you are ready to accept God’s grace through Jesus, then pray this simple prayer:

"Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust him as my Savior and follow him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

OUR DAILY WORD: THURSDAY'S THOUGHTS With Kevin

"I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better" (Ephesians 1:17).

If you have ever tried to read a book by candlelight during a power outage, you know that the dim and flickering flame provides poor illumination for reading. I would prefer a nice-bright, steady 100-watt bulb any day. Bright light makes a book easier to read and easier to understand. In the same way, the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit makes the Bible more understandable. Trying to grasp God's Word by reading by the dim and flickering candle flame of our human understanding is simply foolish, especially when the brilliant light of God is available for the asking.

The Holy Spirit wants to guide our steps and help us to make good decisions—but if we s***f out the flame of the Spirit, we will wander in darkness and invite trouble. The Holy Spirit wants to give us the power to overcome temptation—but if we extinguish the flame of the Spirit, we leave ourselves wide open to Satan's deception. The Holy Spirit wants to open the eyes of our spiritual understanding—but if we douse the flame of the Spirit, we remain willfully blind and ignorant of reality.

We quench the Spirit when we insist on holding on to our pride and our confidence in our own strength. We douse the Spirit when we cling to sin and unforgiveness. We quench the Spirit when we replace the wisdom of the Word of God with our own human foolishness. Not only can individuals smother the Spirit, but entire churches can quench the Spirit. Many churches today tolerate sin and have replaced God's Word with human ideas and programs.

When individual believers and entire congregations smother the Spirit, disaster will follow. So Paul's counsel, "Do not quench the Spirit," is as timely today as when he first wrote those simple-yet-profound words (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times when I have quenched the Holy Spirit in my life, leaning on my own flawed understanding. Help me to turn away from such pride and to put my trust and hope in You, and obeying Your Word. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

"Do You Have Idols?"

The Thessalonians had been idol worshipers—but they had made a 180-degree turnabout. They had broken away from idols and now served the one true God. Not only did they serve God, but they patiently awaited the return of His Son, the risen Lord Jesus.

Here we see the three great evidences of faith: (1) You turn. (2) You serve. (3) You wait for Jesus' return.

You might say, "But Michael, I don't worship idols. I've never bowed down to an idol in my life. This passage doesn't apply to me."

Please understand, an idol is not merely a little god fashioned out of tin or stone. An idol is anything—or anyone—that occupies our attention, our finances, and our time. An idol is anything or anyone that controls us. An idol is anything that takes the place in our lives where God belongs. Our idols today might be selfish ambitions, the accumulation of wealth and power, an infatuation with another person, an addiction to a substance or a behavior, or an obsession with pleasure and fun.

Many of us who claim Jesus as Lord and Savior would have to admit that these are idols in our lives. By the grace of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we need to declare that we hereby turn away from these idols, and we turn to the living God.

The Bible repeatedly contrasts idol worship versus faithfulness to God. Idols are dead; God is alive. Idols are false; God is the Truth. Idols are many; God is one. Idols are visible and earthly; God is invisible and heavenly. Idols are powerless; God is all-powerful. He is the Creator of the universe and the Creator of all humanity.

You cannot claim to have turned from idols to the living God if you're still serving the false idols of your selfish ambitions, your greed and lusts, your habits and addictions, your obsessions and unhealthy relationships. Turn to Christ, and he will set you free from slavery to sin so that you can fully and freely serve the living God.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for setting up idols in Your place. Reveal them to me so that I may repent and turn away from them and to You. May I joyfully serve Your Kingdom as I await the return of my Savior, Jesus Christ. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

"With whom will you compare me or count me equal? . . . Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me" (Isaiah 46:5a, 9).

"The War Is Won"

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
John 16:33

What if an army knew the outcome of a battle before it even started? What would such knowledge do to the confidence of the soldiers? Before the army of Israel attacked Jericho, God told Joshua, “See! I have given Jericho into your hand” (Joshua 6:2). The battle was over before it ever began; God had won the war for them.

Such is the case in the spiritual war that is currently playing out. Satan has been opposing the work of God since before creation. Genesis 3:15 hinted at the final defeat of Satan, and the resurrection of Jesus proved to be the harbinger of the final victory to come. But even before His death and resurrection, Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.” Though the Resurrection was the turning point, there are still battles and skirmishes taking place between Satan’s forces and God’s people. If we stand firm, clothed in the armor of God, we can win every spiritual battle.

Do not fear the enemy’s attacks. Be confident that in Jesus Christ you have overcome the world.

There is no holiness without a warfare.

"You Were Made to Know and Love God" By Rick Warren

“For thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11 (KJV)

The first purpose of your life is to know and love God. The more you understand how much God loves you, the more you're going to love him back. He made you for his pleasure. If he hadn't wanted to love you, you would not exist.

The Bible says, “For thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11 KJV).

The fact is God takes pleasure in just watching you be you. I'm not talking about when you sin, but when you do what he made you to do. So, if he wired you to organize, he enjoys watching you organize a closet or plan a garden. If he made you to be a salesperson and you make a good sale, he says, "That's my girl” or “That's my boy." Or if you play music or work on a car, God just enjoys watching you be you, because he made you and loves you.

Jesus said, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38 NIV). This verse describes worship. Worship is simply letting God love you and then loving him back.

Worship is more than just music. You can worship in silence, in giving, in listening, and in serving others. You can worship God in a hundred different ways as you express your love to him.

The opposite of worship is worry, and it’s the warning sign that you’ve stopped worshiping. Every day, you have a choice: “Am I going to worry, or am I going to worship?”

Matthew 6:32 says, “Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things” (CEV). Why? Because they're not focused on God’s greatness and his love; they're focused on their problems and insecurities.

If you want to live out your purpose of knowing and loving God, here’s how to start. Every morning, pray, “Lord, I know you made me to love me. Thank you. I love you too. And today, if I don't get anything else done, I want to know you a little bit better and I want to love you a little bit more, because that's the first purpose of my life.”

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Even as the Father who is in heaven is perfect. The word "perfect" is more immediately connected with the authority given.

Christ presents the true idea of love, the perfect conception of love. He demands such love as can make what is opposite to it, as well as what is akin to it, its object.

In whom every Christian grace has reached its ripeness and maturity as to be Christ-like by one's search of His authority.

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me and those who seek me diligently find me.

Now may the God of peace— who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen. Hebrews 13;20-21

"Stay Close"

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
—Ephesians 6:10–12 NLT

When he was little, my son Jonathan had a habit of wandering. One day, we were in a hotel and came to an elevator. He ran ahead to push the button. I told him, “If the elevator comes, wait until Dad gets there.” Just as I arrived at the elevator, the doors were closing, and he was inside. He was gone. I frantically pushed the button for the other elevator and waited for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, the doors opened, and I jumped in. I went down to the lobby. He wasn’t there. I ran back to the elevator, pushed every button for every floor, and as the doors opened, I would scream out his name. I didn’t care about decorum. I wanted to find my son. And I found him, about three floors up, wandering around. But you know what? After that experience, he didn’t wander anymore. He got separated from his dad, and it was scary for him. He learned how important it was to stay close to me.

As Christians, we should want to stay as close to our heavenly Father as possible. Our enemy, the devil, is a powerful adversary, and we are no match for him in our own strength. The apostle Peter wrote, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NLT).

We don’t want to venture out into this life on our own abilities and suffer spiritual defeat. I have a healthy respect for the devil’s ability. That’s why I want to stay as close to the Lord as possible. I want to be strong in Him.

Wanting to stay close to your Father may seem like a childish instinct, but it’s actually evidence of a mature faith. In Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul instructs us to “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” and to “put on all of God’s armor” (NLT). He leaves no room for solo outings or wandering journeys.

Staying close to our heavenly Father gives us more than protection by an all-powerful God. Psalm 94:17–19 says, “Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer” (NLT).

If ever there was a time to be walking closely with the Lord, it is now. This is not the time to be playing games with God. This is not the time to wander away.

Question for reflection: How can you tell when you start to wander away from God?
