💛✨ Meet the Team: Kayla ✨💛

We’re so excited to introduce Kayla, one of the incredible people behind Huss Haven Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

Kayla has a naturally nurturing spirit and a special gift for helping animals feel safe, loved, and cared for. Her and her husband James open their home to animals who need a place to heal, grow, and adjust while they wait for their forever families. Whether it’s a nervous newcomer or an animal needing a little extra attention, Kayla helps them build confidence and feel right at home.

When we first launched Huss Haven, Kayla immediately stepped up and volunteered to foster. Without her, we wouldn’t have been able to save Ember and her five kittens. Over the past couple of months, she has poured her heart into caring for them, helping them grow from tiny kittens into healthy, confident cats ready for their forever homes.

Beyond fostering, Kayla also helps with fundraising and supporting our rescue efforts behind the scenes.

We are incredibly grateful for everything Kayla has done for Huss Haven. She has fully embraced rescue life, and we can’t wait to see all the animals she’ll help in the future. ❤️

Please join us in thanking Kayla for opening her home and heart to animals in need. Leave a comment below and show her some love! 🐾❤️

We need to have an honest conversation.

A post by rescue advocate Robbie Miller really resonated with us, and it's a conversation that needs to happen.

"I saw a post yesterday from Best Friends Animal Society celebrating that cat euthanasia numbers are down in shelters.

On the surface, that sounds like a win.

But let’s be real for a second…

I’ve personally talked to a lot of shelters, and many of them don’t even have cats anymore — or they only have a handful. That’s not because the problem disappeared. It’s because somewhere along the line, especially during and after the pandemic, many shelters quietly stopped taking cats.

So of course the euthanasia numbers are “down.” You can’t euthanize animals you’re not admitting.

But here’s the real question nobody wants to talk about:
How are the cats doing out on the streets, in fields, and in our communities?

Because I can tell you — those numbers are NOT down.

We’re seeing MORE:
• Stray and abandoned cats
• Unfixed colonies growing out of control
• Sick and injured cats with nowhere to go
• Rescues and everyday people overwhelmed trying to fill the gap

This isn’t a victory. It’s a shift of responsibility.

Instead of shelters doing their job with taxpayer funding, the burden is being pushed onto the public — rescuers, feeders, and good-hearted people who are already stretched thin.

And in California, we need to start having a serious conversation about accountability and policy. Cats have effectively been treated like “free-roaming” animals, and that mindset has stripped away urgency and responsibility from the systems that are supposed to protect them.

Let me be very clear about one thing:
If you ever hear people trying to normalize “trap and release” for dogs — shut it down immediately. That is a dangerous step backward. We cannot allow the same neglectful standards being applied to cats to spread to dogs.

This isn’t about attacking shelters — it’s about demanding better.

We all want the same thing: fewer animals suffering and dying.
But we don’t get there by manipulating intake and celebrating lower numbers while the real problem grows outside the system.

We get there by:
• Taking responsibility
• Increasing access to spay/neuter
• Supporting rescues instead of replacing them
• And actually showing up for ALL animals — not just the ones inside the building"

The statistics may look better. But from where we're standing, the need has never felt greater.

🏡 Cinder goes home! 🧡

Our sweet, sensitive boy Cinder headed home with his adopter, Maura, on trial adoption this week. ❤️

Cinder has always been the gentle soul of the litter. While he loves his siblings, their nonstop wrestling matches and chaos could be a bit overwhelming for him at times. We had a feeling he would truly blossom once he had a quieter space to call his own, and we were right!

Maura said, “Hi! We are so good, he is completely at home already! ☺️ he’s a bundle of energy and has decided that he loves to snuggle and will not take no for an answer. He also is obsessed with our laptops so we’ve been calling him “the IT guy” lol, he’s always trying to walk on them and sleep on them”.

We miss you already, Cinder, but we’re so excited to watch this next chapter unfold. ❤️

Hazy has officially left the nest! ❤️🥹

Over the past few days, Hazy has really come out of her shell, soaking up all the extra pets, playtime, and attention. We’ve loved watching her sweet personality blossom.

We’re hopeful this is the perfect match, but we’ll definitely miss this blue-eyed girl. Wishing Hazy and Brittney the very best as they start this new chapter together. 💕

🧡🐾🔥 A Major Milestone for Ember & Her Babies 🔥🐾🧡

This week, Ember and all five of her kittens were spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. They are now healthy, protected, and ready for their forever homes, and most will be heading off to their new families this week. ❤️

Spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines, and microchips give animals the best possible start and help stop the cycle, preventing future homeless pets and unnecessary suffering.

When Ember first came into rescue, she was a young mom who had given birth to her five kittens in a car. Thanks to the kindness of the homeowner who looked after them and everyone who has supported their journey, this little family got the chance they deserved. 🧡

Over the past couple of months, we’ve watched tiny kittens grow into healthy, playful, loving companions ready to begin their next chapter. Seeing Ember’s babies head off to loving homes is exactly why we do this.

Thank you to everyone who has followed their journey, shared their posts, donated, and cheered them on along the way. 🧡

If you’d like to help us continue providing lifesaving care to animals like Ember and her babies, donations are always appreciated.

My favorite way to spend a Saturday morning ☀️🐷

Spending time with Happy and Waggy, soaking up the quiet, the belly rubs, and all the little moments that remind me why we started Huss Haven Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

These girls are living proof of what rescue can do. Thanks to supporters like you, they now have a safe place to call home for the rest of their lives.

If you’d like to help support Happy, Waggy, our “fire” litter, and the many animals still to come, our T-shirt fundraiser is still going strong! Every purchase helps provide food, veterinary care, shelter, and sanctuary for animals in need.
