Everyone keep Fezzik in your thoughts, we had to rush him to UC Davis on Saturday night. He was acting fine all week, enjoying watermelon and meals, but then during our evening check with everyone he was laying down in the field and would not get up. We rushed him to Davis and he has a urinary blockage. Unfortunately, this is a very common thing among male sheep and goats. There are many factors. One can be diet, but luckily, we know that is not a factor with our sheep and goats. Another can be that they are neutered very young, so their urethra is very small and not allowed to mature with age, making blockages more likely. They also have a twisted shaped urethra that makes stones getting stuck more common than in other species. Our uc Davis vet also Said we should look into testing our water, cause sometimes mineral content in your well water can predispose them to stones. Fezzik has been stabilized and will be having surgery this week. Hopefully he can come home next week. But he does have several weeks of recovery ahead of him.
