SCARS will have a spot at the Farm Market in Hillsboro Saturday. Selling dog and cat toys. dog treats, cat scratch pads and a lot of misc. that you have to see to appreciate. Catnip "jellyfish", "mice" and bells on a sticks for cats. Tug of war toys and squeakers for dogs. Come see us and buy a toy or something else for a good cause. Hillsboro Main Street will be hopping with street wide sales, and businesses open: Pinto, Trading Post, Rio Abajo Rio, General Store Café. Spend the day. Supposed to be hot Saturday but it is always cooler in Hillsboro. Kingston is happening Saturday, too. Just a few more miles up into the Gila.

So, what should you do if you come across a surprise litter of kittens?

Many people immediately want to rescue them and bring them to a shelter. But baby kittens who are still nursing need round-the-clock care, which may be beyond your shelter’s capacity.

“Bottle babies” have among the highest euthanasia rates at crowded shelters. It’s much better when it’s safe to let mom cat raise them until they can eat on their own. Then, if there’s room at the inn, rescue them for adoption.

So if you find a litter, pause before taking action and observe from a distance. Often, the mother is out hunting for food and will return soon. Only bring kittens to shelters if they are in imminent danger or the mama cat doesn’t return within several hours. Otherwise, remember to “leave the kitten where they’re sittin'!”
