On a chilly April morning, the C.J. Strike Wildlife Management Area in Southwestern Idaho rang with the sound of shovels hitting soil and the shared energy of a community dedicated to conservation. In a fantastic display of partnership, Snake River Quail Forever Chapter teamed up with Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) to lead a major habitat restoration project that will benefit the local ecosystem for decades to come.

Through this collaborative effort, we purchased and planted dozens of native plants, including chokecherry, yellow currant, and wild rose. While these plants add a rugged beauty to the landscape, their primary purpose is vital. These varieties were strategically selected to provide essential escape cover and high-quality forage for native California quail and other upland game birds.

By creating and protecting this crucial habitat, we are building the foundation for a thriving population. These thickets will offer protection from ground and aerial predators, provide a nutritious winter food source, and serve as critical thermal cover against unpredictable Idaho winters.

This project is a testament to what we can achieve when passionate volunteers and state agencies align their goals. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who spent their morning in the dirt to invest in our public lands. We look forward to watching these saplings take root and provide for generations of wildlife to come.

Strong bobwhite populations start with quality brood-rearing habitat. During the summer, quail chicks rely on diverse forb communities and bug-rich cover to provide food, shade, and protection from predators.

This type of habitat can be created through a combination of practices including controlling dense turf grasses with herbicide, light disking, prescribed fire, and planting diverse native forb mixes.

Northern bobwhite rely on dense shrubby/woody cover scattered throughout the landscape to provide readily accessible escape cover from predators, thermal refuge, protection during severe winter weather, and secure loafing habitat. Generally, bobwhite select for habitat patches which average at least 30% early successional woody cover. However, unmanaged shrub cover can quickly develop into forest which provides habitat for many bobwhite predators. If your property is lacking in early-successional shrub cover, you may consider adding some in! You might look to add species such as Chickasaw or American plum, native dogwoods and sumacs, and blackberry/raspberry thickets.

Converting field edges, pivot corners, or unproductive acres into wildlife habitat improves soil health and provides important habitat wildlife. Create awareness by educating friends and family about the benefits of choosing native species for their next project. Support your local nonprofit conservation and natural resource agencies- attend events, volunteer, share their social media posts, etc.

Small actions can make a big difference for future generations.
