🎉We are proud to celebrate our 2026 Native Scholars!

This year, NAFWS awarded 17 scholarships—7 National and 10 Regional—totaling $39,000 in support to students representing 13 Tribal Nations!

🤝We appreciate our continued support from BIA and are especially grateful to everyone who helped us expand our scholarship offerings this year. The Tribal hunts generously donated for our conference silent auctions played a significant role in making this possible.

❤️A heartfelt thank you to the Tribal Nations who contributed these incredible opportunities, and to everyone who participated in our National Conference Golf Tournament and Regional Conference Silent Auctions. Your generosity is helping invest in the next generation of Native leaders and natural resource professionals!

🎓To our scholars, Congratulations! We are excited to support you on your educational journeys and can't wait to see what you accomplish!

🪶NAFWS Participates in National Tribal Infrastructure Coordination Conference

🏔️Last week, NAFWS Alaska Region Tribal Engagement Specialist Jolene Auliye attended the National Tribal Infrastructure Coordination Conference (NTICC) in Reno, Nevada, where Tribes from Alaska and the Lower 48 gathered to share knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned.

🥾Conference activities included field trips to restoration and conservation projects, presentations from Tribal leaders, and a Young Leaders Plenary featuring youth from across the country.

🤝During the Resource Rendezvous, Jolene shared information about NAFWS and its work supporting Tribal natural resources. She also connected with members of the Relocation, Managed Retreat, and Protect-in-Place (RMP) cohort to help develop roadmaps for participating communities.

🎨The conference also featured a cultural evening at the Nevada Museum of Art, celebrating connections and shared experiences.

🪶 NAFWS Participates in Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network Meeting

🔹NAFWS Alaska Region Tribal Engagement Specialist Kristi Tapio-Harper presented at the two-day Alaska Tribal Conservation District Network Regional Meeting in Anchorage earlier this week.

🤝 The meeting was intended to assist Tribes interested in forming a Tribal Conservation District (TCD), as well as newly established TCDs seeking additional startup information. Representatives from Kake, Yakutat, Bering Sea Interior, and Kawerak were in attendance.

🪶 NAFWS Visits Michigan Tribe to Highlight AERI Grant Progress

🍂 On October 6, NAFWS Grant Field Liaison Andy Edwards visited the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Watersmeet, Michigan, to learn how their NFWF AERI grant supports establishing a Natural Resources Department guided by a strategic plan informed by community input and a comprehensive natural resources inventory.

🤝 Lara Jacobs, Natural Resources Director; Owen Ryskey, Administrative Assistant; and Beth Schrader, Environmental Officer, shared their progress. The grant funded three key hires in September 2025. One year later, the department has 18 staff members, with 10 more expected by this time in 2027.

🌱 Through determined grant-seeking, the team has secured more than three dozen additional grants, building on AERI resources to support community programs including an orchard, community gardens, pollinator plots, and a greenhouse.

🌿 The team is completing a natural resources inventory of reservation lands, addressing invasive species, restoring wild rice, evaluating areas for a future bison operation, and improving the Tribal fish hatchery. They also collaborate with existing programs, including the Tribal Historic Preservation Office, to coordinate consultation and input on projects on the reservation and in their ceded territories.

🪶 Youth involvement across programs is preparing future leaders to carry this work forward!
