Something new is coming to Newton Centre's Union Street this Saturday and Welcome Home will be part of it! We will be collecting new and gently used towels. Please spread the word and look for our bin.

On Saturday morning, June 13, Newton Centre's Union Street will transform into a vibrant farmers' market festival, featuring farm fresh produce, local makers and family-friendly activities.

More than 25 vendors will line the street, which will be closed to car traffic, while nearby shops and restaurants are open—many offering special farmers' market promotions throughout the day.

Think of all the things we use in our kitchens every day that we take for granted. Many of our clients move into homes without these basic goods. Do you have kitchen items you aren’t using that are still in good condition (no chips, stains or rust)? We would love to send them to new homes with our clients. Even just one item can make a difference.

Currently we are short on many items needed for cooking and food prep (see post). See our website for the full list of what we accept (and don’t accept) and to schedule a drop off. Links to our website are in the comments. Please share and thank you! 🙏🏡

Welcome Home was well represented in last weekend's 250th Anniversary Salute to Service parade! Our volunteers drove through the neighborhoods of Newton, along with other organizations, waving flags and sharing candy with spectators. We were proud to represent Welcome Home together with so many other local nonprofit organizations and city departments! Big thank you to Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart which recently held a drive for us! Folks from the school dropped off a load of the new and gently used items they collected, plus several Target gift cards! 🙏

Drives are essential for keeping a consistent flow of goods on our shelves. Donations can be in our clients' homes as soon as the next day of receiving them. The need is that high as evidenced by our substantial waiting list of families needing basic goods.

If your organization is interested in sponsoring a drive now or in the future, please see our website for details. Link in the comments below. Thank you! Charles River Regional Chamber

We are in the news again!

Welcome Home volunteer Nan Niland (second from right with other Welcome Home volunteers) was mentioned in the May 6 issue of the Fig City News Newton people in the news column. (Link to Fig City News is in the comments below.)

From the Fig City News article:

Nan Niland was featured in the March 26 New York Times article, How a Healthy Mind-Set Influences Longevity, exploring how her volunteering at Newton’s Welcome Home provides a sense of purpose that research has shown can improve health and longevity. The article states, “Feeling that you are valued and have something to contribute to others, often called mattering, can help drive you toward positive health behaviors that influence longevity.” Niland says, “We love working at Welcome Home, where we receive donations of gently used home goods and get those items to people experiencing hardship. Anything not suitable for reuse is recycled and kept out of the landfill.”

Welcome Home partners with agencies that support veterans, schools, hospitals, survivors of domestic violence, homeless shelters, housing authorities, and refugees. We also accept requests directly from any person in need of home goods. We work to ensure that our clients have the basic household necessities to care for themselves and their families with dignity.

The demand for our services continues, with our volunteers helping to provide basic necessities like silverware and dishes, pillows and blankets to hundreds of households each month. With your financial support we can continue to provide goods that make a house a home.

We have been told by the social service agencies who we work with that when you give home goods to an individual the benefit is amplified to their children, spouse, parents, and community because those items help everyone around them.

Please support our mission by honoring a special woman in your life this Mother's Day by May 8th. Your gift will be matched! Link to Donate Funds is in the comments below or on our website.

Local school drives are a huge help in keeping our shelves full of the most requested home goods.

Last month we received a wonderful drop off from the Apple Orchard School in Brookline. Drive organizer, Katie (in blue), a former Apple Orchard parent and current employee told us: "The entire community at Apple Orchard School enthusiastically rallied to collect and donate towels and blankets for Welcome Home. Our learners talked about how their families were helping other families. Classes organized, sorted, and counted the items. We were so excited to give away 42 blankets and 126 towels. It was a very rewarding effort all around!”

If your school or organization would like to organize a drive, please see our website or email us for more info. Link below in comments.
