🍌🥕 Got kitchen scraps? Our garden needs them!

The **BAUUC Community Garden compost bin is open to the public**, and we could really use more food scraps! Help us turn your peels, cores, and trimmings into compost that nourishes our garden. 🌱

**Here’s what to bring:**

✅ Fruit and vegetable scraps
✅ Peels, cores, and trimmings
✅ Coffee grounds and paper coffee filters
✅ Crushed eggshells

🚫 Please leave out meat, fish, bones, dairy, grease, oil, plastic, bags, and packaging.

**We’re accepting food scraps only at this time—please hold off on leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste.**

🌱 **Growing More Than Just Vegetables!** 💚

At BAUUC Community Garden, we believe a garden is about so much more than what grows in the soil.

🥕 **We grow food.** Through our partnership with the Clear Lake Food Pantry, we're helping bring fresh, locally grown produce to families in our community.

🌻 **We grow connections.** Our garden brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to work side by side, share knowledge, and build friendships.

🌎 **We grow a healthier future.** Through sustainable gardening practices, composting, pollinator habitats, and hands-on education, we're learning how to care for the earth and one another. And we're just getting started!

As we head into November, we're excited to share more about the people, projects, and possibilities that make our garden so special. Because at BAUUC Community Garden, we're not just growing vegetables.

🔨 ALL HANDS ON DECK! 🌱

Remember that HUGE pergola donated to the BAUUC Community Garden? It’s time to put it to work—as TWO separate shaded areas!

But first… we’ve got some digging to do. 😂 We need help digging **12 holes, each 24 inches deep**, to get this project off the ground!

📅 Saturday, December 5
⏰ Starting at 8 a.m.—until the job is finished or we’re exhausted!

Kristine and I would love some extra hands, energy, and good company. Know someone or a group looking for community service hours? Or someone willing to donate their time and a little muscle? Send them our way!

Bring work gloves, water, and a shovel or post-hole digger if you have one. Come for an hour or stay longer—every helping hand counts.

There's a little magic in every garden...

✨ Tiny seeds transforming into beautiful plants.

🕷️ Spiders weaving their intricate webs.

🦇 Bats helping keep insect populations in balance.

🌙 And the mysterious wonders of nature happening all around us!

This Halloween, we're celebrating the wild, wonderful, and sometimes spooky creatures that help make our gardens thrive.

Remember, not everything that creeps, crawls, or flies through the garden is something to fear. Many of these little visitors play important roles in a healthy ecosystem!

Did you know that some of the best things we can give our garden are things we might otherwise throw away?

At BAUUC Community Garden, we're working to make sustainability part of everything we do!

Our three-stage composting system helps us turn garden waste, leaves, and other compostable materials into nutrient-rich organic matter that can improve our soil.

🌿 **Why do we love composting?**

♻️ It keeps organic material out of landfills.

🌱 It improves soil structure and supports healthy plant growth.

💧 It helps soil retain moisture.

🌎 It supports a healthier, more sustainable garden.

Every handful of finished compost represents another step toward caring for the earth and growing food responsibly.

🥬🌱 **Fall Gardening in Southeast Texas: It's Our Time to Shine!**

One of the best things about gardening along the Texas Gulf Coast? Our growing season doesn't end when summer does!

In fact, cooler fall temperatures create wonderful conditions for some of our favorite vegetables.

🥬 **Leafy Greens** — Kale, lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard thrive as temperatures cool.

🥕 **Root Vegetables** — Carrots, radishes, and beets are great choices for fall planting.

🥦 **Cool-Season Favorites** — Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower love our milder weather.

🌱 **Herbs** — Cilantro, parsley, and dill can flourish during our cooler months.

Fall gardening also means fewer scorching afternoons, making time spent in the garden a little more enjoyable!

🍂🌱 **Fall Is in the Air... and in the Garden!** 🌻

While much of the country is putting their gardens to bed for winter, here in Southeast Texas, we're getting ready for another wonderful growing season!

Cooler temperatures mean new opportunities to plant, grow, and harvest, and there's always something happening at BAUUC Community Garden. 💚

From preparing garden beds and planting fall crops to spreading mulch and planning exciting new projects, we're keeping busy!

And as we look ahead to the coming months, we're especially excited about the opportunities to grow our garden, expand our educational programs, and continue giving back to our community.

We made it through September! 😂☀️Here in Zone 9a, October is when our fall garden really starts getting exciting. As temperatures hopefully begin moving in the right direction, it's time to start making room for some of the vegetables that love our cooler months. 🌱

October is a great time to think about crops like:

🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Cabbage
🌱 Cauliflower
🥕 Carrots
❤️ Beets
🌱 Radishes
🧅 Onions
🌿 Herbs and other cool-season favorites

If you've been waiting for the Texas heat to calm down before starting your fall garden, your time is coming.

This week is a great time to:

🌱 Finish refreshing your garden beds
♻️ Add finished compost
🌱 Get seeds and transplants ready
💧 Check irrigation before planting
📝 Decide what you're planting—and where
🥕 Plan for succession planting so everything isn't ready at once

At the BAUUC Community Garden, we're getting ready to transition more of our growing space into fall and winter production, including crops grown through Grow A Row for the Clear Lake Food Pantry. 💚

And remember: you don't have to plant everything at once. Gardening is a season, not a weekend project. 🌱

🌱 What an incredible Garden Workday!

Yesterday, we had more volunteers come out to lend a hand than we have had at any other workday this year! Together, our volunteers contributed an amazing 29.5 hours of work to the BAUUC Community Garden. 💚

Thanks to everyone’s hard work, we:

🌿 Weeded and prepared all of our donation beds for planting
🫘 Planted bean seeds generously donated by Burpee
🪵 Spread mulch between the garden beds to begin creating new walkways

We still have plenty of mulch left to spread, but once the work is complete and the mulch has settled, we’ll have consistently cleaner and more walkable pathways throughout the garden.

Even more meaningful than the work itself was the time we spent together. We had the opportunity to connect, learn more about one another, share stories, and strengthen the relationships that make our garden feel like a true community.

Thank you to every person who showed up, worked hard, and helped us accomplish so much in one day. Many hands truly do make light work...and yesterday proved just how much we can accomplish when we work together!
