FALL GARDENING STARTS NOW!

The calendar may say September, but here in Southeast Texas, summer clearly hasn't gotten the memo. 😂☀️

Even with the heat, fall garden season is already beginning in Zone 9a!

Now is the time to start preparing garden beds, adding compost and organic matter, checking irrigation, clearing out tired summer plants, and deciding what will take their place.

Some warm-season crops still have time for another round, while we're also beginning to prepare for the cool-season vegetables that will take us through fall and winter.

Here at the BAUUC Community Garden, we're planning our fall Grow A Row crops so we can continue growing fresh produce for the Clear Lake Food Pantry. 🌱💚

September is less about flipping a switch from summer to fall and more about making the transition.

Little Hands Can Grow BIG Things

Some of the most important things we grow in a community garden aren't vegetables. We grow curiosity, generosity, confidence, an understanding of where our food comes from, and sometimes...we grow a lifelong love of getting our hands dirty. 😂🌱💚

The BAUUC Community Garden wants to create more opportunities for children and youth to learn through hands-on experiences in the garden through our:

🌻 Sprouting Spirits Gardeners 🌻

Our vision is to give young gardeners opportunities to:

🌱 Plant seeds and watch them grow
🥕 Help harvest fruits and vegetables
🐝 Learn about bees, butterflies and other pollinators
♻️ Discover how compost turns scraps into healthy soil
🐦 Learn why birds and wildlife belong in our gardens
🍅 Understand where their food actually comes from
💚 Experience the joy of growing something themselves

And they don't need gardening experience.

That's kind of the point.

We want the garden to become a living outdoor classroom where children can ask questions, get dirty, make discoveries and learn from the gardeners around them.

As our garden grows, we'd love to have more parents, grandparents, educators and garden-loving community members help us build Sprouting Spirits Gardeners into something special.

Because when you teach a child how to grow food...you're planting something that can last much longer than one growing season. 🌱

See something crawling on your plants? Before reaching for the bug spray... Figure out who you're looking at. 👀🐛

Not every insect in your garden is a pest. Some are pollinators, some prey on insects that damage our plants, some are simply passing through. And yes...some really ARE eating your vegetables. 😂

A healthy garden is full of life, and learning to recognize what's living there can help us make better decisions about when—and whether—we need to intervene.

One of our goals at the BAUUC Community Garden is to encourage a healthy garden ecosystem where vegetables, flowers, pollinators, birds and beneficial insects can coexist.

So next time you see a mysterious little visitor...Don't squish first and ask questions later. 😂🌱

Take a picture. Identify it. Then decide what—if anything—you need to do.

If your garden is looking a little… crispy right now, you're not alone. 😂☀️ August in Southeast Texas is HARD on a garden. Months of heat, watering, pests and heavy production can leave plants...and gardeners...a little worn out.

But before you pull everything, take a good look.

🌱 Is the plant still producing?
🌱 Is there healthy new growth?
🌱 Could pruning help?
🌱 Does it need a little compost or mulch?
🌱 Or has it simply reached the end of its season?

Some summer plants may have another round of production left in them, while others are ready to make room for our fall garden. And that's okay. Gardening isn't just about knowing when to plant. It's also about knowing when to let something go. 💚

Over the next few weeks at the BAUUC Community Garden, we'll be evaluating what's still producing, refreshing our soil and beginning the transition into our fall growing season.

Help us grow fresh produce for the Clear Lake Food Pantry. During our spring season alone, our garden donated more than 70 pounds of fresh produce, and we're working to grow even more.

Plant. Harvest. W**d. Build. Compost. Water. Help with a project. You don't have to be an experienced gardener to contribute.

🤝 Join a Garden Team
As our garden grows, we're working to establish teams focused on growing and harvesting, food-pantry support, sustainability and composting, projects and infrastructure, community outreach, and youth and education.

We're creating more opportunities for children and youth to experience the garden as a living outdoor classroom—learning about growing food, pollinators, birds, compost, sustainability, and giving back to their community.

🌱 Our Community Garden Story Is Growing! 🌱

We’re excited to share that the BAUUC Community Garden was recently featured in an interview!

When we stepped into managing the garden, we hoped to create more than a place to grow vegetables. We wanted a space where people could grow food, build friendships, share stories, support one another, and give back to our community.

Watching that vision take root has been incredible. Every garden bed, workday, donation, conversation, harvest, and pound of produce shared with our local food pantry represents the people who make this garden what it is. 💚

We’re grateful to everyone who has donated, volunteered, planted, weeded, watered, built, hauled, encouraged, and believed in what this garden can become.

🌱 Our new compost area is officially up and running! 🌱

Kristine and I spent the day building this 3-stage compost bin for the garden, and we are so excited to see it put to good use!

Projects like this are possible because of the generous donations from our gardeners, church members, friends, and community. Every donation helps us continue improving the garden, reducing waste, and creating a more sustainable space for everyone. 💚

And of course, Liz had the honor of making the very first deposit! 😂🥦🍂

This new system will allow us to move compost through three stages—from fresh garden and kitchen scraps, to actively decomposing material, and finally to beautiful finished compost ready to go right back into our garden beds. ♻️🌱
