Sometimes it starts with one person, one passion or one idea that a family wants to carry forward.
This story shared by the Community Foundation of Marshall County is a beautiful example of how a memorial fund can grow over time and continue supporting something that mattered deeply to someone.
More than 20 years later, Jamie Christenson’s love of the performing arts is still creating opportunities for others.
We share stories like this because they remind us that charitable giving can take many forms, and sometimes an idea that begins very personally can have an impact for years to come.
If you ever have an idea for honoring someone, supporting a cause you care about or creating something that can continue giving back to Hamilton County, we are always happy to help you think through what that might look like.
It Starts With One.
🐾 At the Marshalltown School Board meeting on Monday, October 5, family members of the Jamie Christenson Fund for the Performing Arts presented $3,000 gifts to both the Marshalltown Community School District Drama Department and the Marshalltown Auditorium Foundation.
Bob Christenson, Jamie’s father, reflected on the lasting impact of his daughter’s life and legacy. “It’s hard to grasp that a little over 24 years ago our lives were forever changed,” he shared.
In the summer of 2002, Jamie was preparing for her senior year at Marshalltown High School when she tragically died in a drowning accident in northern Minnesota while on a camping trip with her church youth group.
Jamie’s love for theater began in third grade with her first role in the YMCA Thimble Theater production of Rocco – the Rolling Stone. She continued performing throughout her school years in Marshalltown School District productions and with the Marshalltown Community Theatre. Her passion for theater was unmistakable.
Following Jamie’s passing, the Christenson family established the Jamie Christenson Fund for the Performing Arts at the Community Foundation of Marshall County, using more than $60,000 in community tributes to create a lasting legacy in her honor.
Today, the fund has grown to more than $100,000 and has provided over $25,000 in support to organizations that enrich performing arts opportunities in Marshalltown.
We are incredibly grateful to the Christenson family for continuing to honor Jamie’s memory and passion for the arts, helping create opportunities for others to experience the joy of theater.
