Our dear friend Scott Anderson passed away last Monday as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his wife Jeila, children Wolfgang and Ursula, parents Dave and Lindy, sisters Laura, Joy, and Jenn, and the largest group of chosen family and friends imaginable. Despite our great sadness, we feel deep gratitude for the life Scott led and the ways he inspired us to live so fully.

Scott arrived in Wassaic very soon after the first festival and immediately found ways to be indispensable: DJ’ing our benefits, founding and directing our music program, and joining our board on day one with his wife Jeila. He was a strategic visionary, an incredible connector, and seemingly without a limit to his energy. Scott’s worlds melded into one another with his invitation and encouragement. He operated from the belief that a rising tide raises all ships, and it was his dream to support and witness his friends achieving theirs. He was brilliant, playful, and so endlessly kind. We truly have never met anyone who wasn’t immediately (and permanently) smitten with him.

Scott was happiest connecting all the dots, leading a procession, starting the dance floor, fixing the lighting, creating the vibe, and welcoming everyone to join in on the joke. He loved making new friends, seeing all of his old ones, and most of all, traveling with Jeila, Ursula, and Wolfgang.

Most importantly, we believe, he would want all of you who knew him to make time to complete a small action of service in gratitude. Call an old friend, give someone a record, make a beautiful dinner, throw a dance party, drink the bottle of wine you’ve been saving… you get the point. Don’t put off anything. Hug your friends and share with your loved ones your appreciation for them.

Wassaic Project is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Delano Dunn () : Echoes in the Margin, curated by Mickalene Thomas () and hosted at Troutbeck (.ny) in Amenia, NY. Opening reception is June 25 from 5-7 PM.

The exhibition continues an ongoing collaboration between Wassaic Project and Troutbeck, rooted in a shared commitment to supporting artists, fostering public engagement, and advancing cultural exchange in the Hudson Valley. Together, both institutions have cultivated a space where contemporary art, history, education, and community are brought into active conversation, extending the legacy of creative and civic exchange that has defined both places. In Echoes in the Margin, Delano Dunn reimagines how Black identity and desire have been shaped and seen, and what it might look like to see them anew.

Curator Mickalene Thomas writes:

“The work of Dunn unfolds as a layered meditation on memory, identity, and the unstable terrain of historical narrative. The presentation brings Dunn’s distinct visual language into dialogue with a site long shaped by cultural exchange, intellectual gathering, and the complexities of American history.

Dunn’s practice draws from a vast personal archive of found imagery culled from advertisements, art history, and vernacular photography which he reassembles into densely composed paintings and collages. These works operate as both excavation and intervention. Figures emerge, dissolve, and reconfigure across his surfaces, refusing singular interpretation. Through this process, Dunn disrupts conventional hierarchies of representation, foregrounding how Black identity, desire, and presence have been constructed, consumed, and often obscured.”

Our 2027 artist residency open call is live through July 1, 2026! Please join us on Zoom next Wednesday, June 10 from 5-6PM ET to learn more about life in Wassaic and meet our Programming team, Will Hutnick , Dani Klebes and Dane Cohen . They will answer any and all questions you might have about the application process!

Our 2027 Summer Exhibition Open Call is live! The deadline is August 10 at midnight ET. Don’t overthink this application. There’s no one thing we’re looking for, and we’re always open to creative new uses of Maxon Mills as an exhibition space.

Artists are selected based on the quality of the work and how well a given piece fits alongside other pieces selected for the show. We accept four types of proposals for our summer programming: ready-to-hang work, site-specific installations, temporary installations/performances, and printed works. We’re so excited to be participating in again this year! Come spend the whole weekend with us at the Mill.

We are kicking off Upstate Art Weekend with the Opening Reception of “Echoes in the Margin,” a solo exhibition by Delano Dunn () curated by Mickalene Thomas () presented by Wassiac Project and hosted at Troutbeck (.ny) on June 25 from 5-7 PM!

Gallery hours will be extended hours till 7 PM on Friday June 26 and Saturday June 27, and we will be open on Monday June 29! Danielle Klebe’s () installation “Wassaic Painting and Motorcycle Club” will have the same hours as the gallery!

On Saturday June 27, explore our Summer Exhibition “Because now is the time of monsters,” drop by the Art Nest, make art with Genevieve Lowe , hear artist talks by Sameulle Green , Margaret Jacobs , Amir Khadar .khadar, and Vanessa Villarreal , try a cyanotype workshop with Tamsen Wojtanowski , step into Ace Lehner’s “Barbershop: The Art of Q***r Failure,” and later head to open studios of the June artists-in-residence, , , , , , , , , , .lof, .mahoney, and . To everyone who’s new here, and everyone who’s been away for a while — hi again! With our Summer Exhibition now on view and extended open gallery hours (Thursday-Sunday, 12-5 PM), we’d like to take the time to re-introduce ourselves. There’s a lot going on here!

Wassaic Project is a contemporary arts institution that has been a cornerstone of upstate New York’s cultural landscape since 2008, fostering positive social change through art and education. We bring together emerging artists and local communities through world-class contemporary art exhibitions, vital education and public programs, and a highly regarded year-round artist residency program.

Based in the historic Maxon Mills—an 8,000-square-foot, seven-story former grain elevator transformed into a vibrant arts space—Wassaic Project serves as a dynamic incubator for new voices in contemporary art. Annual programming includes the artist residency program, monthly open studios, community events, and three exhibitions. Our arts education programs reach more than 1,000 students each year through after-school art clubs, summer camps, and the free, ADA-accessible family drop-in artmaking space, the Art Nest, open every Saturday from 12–5 PM.

There are only SEVEN more days to apply for Haunted Barn! The new application deadline is May 28, midnight EDT. As a reminder, our annual spooky site specific exhibition, Haunted Mill, will be...for the first time...in the Luther Barn! Apply at link in bio.

We are accepting a few types of proposals: site-specific and/or outdoor installations in the Luther Barn and performances. We will prioritize interactive and immersive proposals.

Thank you to the almost 400 of you who attended our opening of “Because, now is the time of monsters.” The day felt like a big family reunion and it was so lovely to see the impact Wassaic Project has had on our part of rural NY!

This exhibition will be open Thursday-Sunday from 12-5 PM through September 12. Please stop by, we can’t wait to welcome you!
