Small Town, Big Message: Community Unveils New Peace Pole
Anaconda, MT — Local residents to gather at Rotary Park- behind Dee Motors on Sunday June 14th at 3pm to dedicate a new Peace Pole, an international symbol visually urging global harmony.
The project, spearheaded by the Interact Club and Rotary Club of Anaconda, serves as a permanent reminder of the community's commitment to peace and unity.
A Universal Message
The handcrafted monument displays the phrase "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in four different languages: English, Salish, Galic, and Spanish. These languages were chosen to reflect the diverse heritage and inclusive spirit of the local area.
Peace Poles originally started in Japan in 1955. Today, over 20,000 peace poles have been dedicated by Rotary clubs around the world. Spreading peace remains a core focus of all Rotary clubs, Interact is the highschool level club of Rotary, Interact has spent the year planning the peace pole project.
Community Leaders Speak
"This pole is more than just wood and paint," said Nikki Powers, Interact Rotarian Advisor and Assistant Area District Governor. "It is a daily reminder that peace begins right here in our own neighborhoods, schools, and homes."
During the ceremony, local Interact students and Butte Rotarians, with special guests, Past District Rotary Governor, Jim McBride and his wife Libby and community member Charlie Farmer will gather to share poems and reflections on what harmony means to the town. The event will conclude with a moment of silence and prayer offered by Rotarian Phil Masters and a joint reading of the inscription.
A Lasting Legacy
The Rotary Club hopes the site will become a quiet space for reflection, meditation, and community gathering for generations to come.
Funding and landscaping for the project were made possible through The Rotary Club of Anaconda and volunteer labor from Anaconda Deer Lodge County and Joe Ungeretti. Rotary extends gratitude to the county for their assistance in preparing the park and planting the pole. Rotary has worked for the past 2 years to raise funds for the beautiful pavilion, but without the county's support in planning, the park would not have come together as a community gathering place.
Happy Camper Hot Dogs and Smores will be onsite to supply food, special thank you to the Novak family for their continued partnership with Rotary and Interact.
