Congress was meant to be public service, not a permanent way of life. But when there is no limit on terms, the perks and privileges of Washington can become part of the routine, and some lawmakers retire in spirit long before they retire from office. Term limits help keep service temporary and accountable.

The longer lawmakers stay in Washington, the more time special interests have to build relationships and influence around them. And those relationships can become valuable to lawmakers too, expanding the networks and access that come with years in office. Congressional term limits would bring regular turnover and make entrenched influence harder to build on both sides.

When 19-year-old Gregory Watson wrote a college term paper arguing that a forgotten 1789 amendment could still be ratified, his professor gave him a "C" and told him it was impossible.

He didn't listen.

Long before social media or the internet, Watson launched a relentless, self-funded campaign. Over 200 years after James Madison introduced it, the measure crossed the finish line to become the 27th Amendment.

His school many years later changed his grade from a C to an A.

This shows just how possible congressional term limits are with enough citizen support. Sign the petition to term limit Congress: termlimits.com/petitionfb

With National Day of Democracy yesterday and National Constitution day tomorrow it feels like an appropriate time to share a reminder from President Truman on how term limits would help fix our government. What do you think was he correct?

Today is International Day of Democracy.

Thomas Jefferson proposed regular rotation in Congress in 1776 because he understood the danger of staying in office too long.

Congressional term limits carry that principle forward by helping keep power moving and public service temporary.

Tune into the latest episode of No Uncertain Terms!
-The show examines the congressional defined-benefit pension, highlighting cases where former lawmakers receive substantial lifetime benefits despite controversial or relatively short careers in office.
-USTL President Philip Blumel explains how lawmakers qualify for Social Security, the Thrift Savings Plan, and the separate defined-benefit pension that vests after five years of service.
and includes arguments that the pension can reward political longevity and careerism, creating a financial incentive to remain in Congress.

The issue isn’t always individual politicians. It’s a system that rewards staying in Washington longer and longer.

Over time, that can create distance between lawmakers and the communities they serve. Term limits help restore the idea that public service should be temporary and keep lawmakers rooted in the communities they represent.

How can Congress have a 10% approval rating while more than 90% of incumbents who seek reelection keep their seats?

Incumbent advantages are hard to overcome. Term limits would create more open seats, attract more candidates, and give voters more choices.

America thrives on competition. Congress needs more of it.
