Join Muslim Counterpublics Lab for a closing reception of Shattering Justice & Re-Making the Muslim Threat at the American Poetry Museum and a zine-making workshop exploring memory as an act of resistance. The exhibit traces how the War on Terror has constructed Muslims as threats to justify warfare, surveillance, criminalization, detention, and torture. Together, we will reflect on these histories and the lives, experiences, and resistance that dominant narratives have silenced or erased.

Building on MCL and Muslim Power Building Project's zine call, “We Remember What They Tried to Erase,” the workshop will use the exhibit as inspiration for participants to write, collage and art to create zines to share our stories, honor our grief, and articulate our demands for justice. What do we refuse to let be forgotten? Whose stories do we carry? What futures can we imagine beyond the violence of the War on Terror?

As the exhibit closes, we will carry its questions into a shared practice of memory and remembrance and the power - and indeed necessity to document our histories, challenge the narratives that justify state violence, and tell our stories on our own terms. No prior zine-making experience is necessary.

Last week our Executive Director Maha Hilal spoke on a panel about 25 years of the War on Terror at Notre Dame University with Spencer Ackerman , Deepa Kumar, and Jeremy Varon. The panel collectively covering topics such as the trajectory of the war, rhetorics of state violence, imperial feminism, and the role of the anti-war movement in challenging the post 9/11 infrastructure. We're super grateful to Razan Bayan for her amazing hospitality and for convening this incredible event and we look forward to collaborating again in the future!

We’re still in awe of the incredible week we had during our conference: When Will This War End? this past September 17th and 18th. 🥺🙌🏼

It was a truly insightful two days with almost 150 participants, filled with analysis, lessons, and discussions on the many dimensions of the War on Terror that has impacted our communities locally and globally for 25 years and beyond.

This conference was monumental not only for MCL, but for our colleagues and community members who have been longing for a space that centers the lived experiences of Muslims and marginalized communities. ❤️‍🔥🪬

We heard from activists, lawyers, scholars and organizers who discussed the weaponization and expansion of the carceral system, propaganda around national security to justify surveillance, policing and the erosion of people’s civil liberties. Survivors, political prisoners and their families reminded us that we must include the most marginalized, targeted and forgotten among us as work to abolish the War on Terror infrastructure.

We also examined the tactics and tools used by the state to oppress communities by discussing the legacy of America and how Islamophobia is also connected to our country’s history of anti-Indigenous racism and anti-Blackness. This gathering was critical to learn about how we have organized campaigns to demand accountability by building our collective power. 💪🏼✊🏼👏🏼

You may have seen Laura Loomer and others attacking our organization and its leadership online for the last two weeks. While these attacks are the immediate reason for this statement, our response is directed at something much larger: a climate in which Islamophobia has continued to thrive and where decontextualizing the words of Muslims, vilifying those who challenge the violence of the War on Terror, and demanding silence in the face of that violence have become increasingly acceptable.

We reject the premise that Muslims must remain silent about state violence directed at our communities - especially while this violence continues to be normalized. We refuse to accept the silencing of our voices, the erasure of our grief, or the claim that naming and challenging state violence falls beyond the bounds of legitimate public debate.

We welcome rigorous disagreement grounded in academic, intellectual, and journalistic integrity. What we will not do is allow bad-faith distortions to determine what we are permitted to say or mourn.

We will not be intimidated into silence about state violence in the War on Terror and we will continue seeking justice, accountability and the fight to dismantle and abolish this disastrous national security infrastructure.

Our collective liberation depends on it.
