Thank you to the Minisink Chapter of the DAR for opening the doors of the Old Stone Schoolhouse to the community over the weekend! 🍎
This little stone building has stood for nearly 300 years. The land was donated in 1723 by Charles Howell for the express purpose of building a school, and the schoolhouse itself dates to somewhere between 1730 and 1740. It sits on Kings Highway, where General Washington is said to have paused on his travels to greet the schoolchildren, sometimes tossing them coins. 🪙
Inside, you'll find the way school used to be: a cast iron pot belly stove, rows of desks, and the daily chores that kept the room running, like hauling in wood, sweeping the floor, and banging the dust out of the erasers.
When the school closed in 1938, the Minisink Chapter bought it at auction for $750, and they have preserved and maintained it ever since.
