There has been considerable momentum in bringing awareness to the health disparities experienced by people with complex disabilities and how lack of clinical skills has contributed to these inequities. Unfortunately “awareness” does not translate into "competency." The AADMD supports the efforts to address competent disability clinical skills at all levels of education. AADMD supports NCD efforts in urging ACGME to make disability clinical-care and competency training a requirement, rather than simply encouraging programs to provide it.

🩺 Accessible information is essential to accessible healthcare.

October is Health Literacy Month, an opportunity to recognize the importance of helping every patient understand and participate in their healthcare.

For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), effective communication may mean using plain language, visual supports, accessible materials, or allowing additional time for questions and discussion.

When healthcare professionals adapt how they communicate, they empower patients to make informed decisions and take a more active role in their care.

Better communication. Better understanding. Better healthcare for all.

Are we meeting the needs of patients with IDD throughout their entire care journey?

From accessing oral healthcare to navigating anesthesia and sedation, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can encounter barriers at every step.

At AADMD’s October Virtual Grand Rounds, we’re bringing medicine and dentistry together to talk about how we can change that.

Join James E. Hunt, MD, and Angie Kuang for The Overlooked Patient*and explore practical ways to strengthen oral health and perioperative care for people with IDD.

What could you contribute to the conversation?

Advocacy & Policy
Share strategies for systems change, healthcare equity, disability rights, community engagement, self-advocacy, or translating policy into better care.

Educational Innovations
Show us how you’re strengthening curricula, expanding training opportunities, incorporating lived experience, or preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Emerging Technology & AI
Explore assistive technology, AI, digital health, accessibility tools, research, or innovative approaches to improving healthcare delivery and communication.

Best Practices & Team-Based Care
Share evidence-based practices, clinical innovations, behavioral health strategies, interdisciplinary models, or practical approaches care teams can put into action.

We especially encourage proposals that elevate self-advocate voices, incorporate lived experience, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and give attendees practical ideas they can take home.
