Women for Conservation invites you to discover “Scale Guardians” supported by the Women in Science and Conservation Fellowship Program. This project is led by Deisy Joana Acero Agudelo in Turbo, Antioquia.🇨🇴🌎

This project protects snakes, lizards, turtles, and other reptiles through information and knowledge distribution 🐍🦎🐢. Through environmental solutions and educational tools, local communities protect species and safely coexist with wildlife.

Through this project, community action, women’s participation, knowledge-making, and species conservation are deeply interconnected—ensuring change, possibilities, and coexistence with one another.🌱💚

Some species stay with you forever. 🦜💚

Learning about birds on the brink of extinction, especially endemic species found only in Colombia, changes the way we see the world. Their survival depends not only on the ecosystems they call home, but also on the people who live alongside them.

Protecting biodiversity means protecting their habitats, the air they breathe, and the communities that can make a difference in their future.

At Women for Conservation, we believe that empowering people, especially women, is essential to protecting the incredible biodiversity we share. Because when communities thrive, nature has a better chance to thrive, too. 🌿

During Climate Week NYC, we spoke about something we witness every day in the field: women are already an unstoppable force for protecting nature. All that’s missing is our support.

Investing in them, empowering them, and helping one another — that’s the formula that’s transforming entire communities.

In honor of World Contraception Day, Women for Conservation believes that it is crucial to highlight key testimonies, experiences, and beliefs of women who participated in the Family Planning initiative in the Colombian cities of Medellin and Santa Marta.

Several women focused on the impacts of the project on their access, future opportunities, wellbeing, and personal agency. These testimonies highlight the lived impacts of family planning projects on local populations, especially women.

Climate Week NYC 🌎

I was honored to join Daughters for Earth and Vital Voices Global Partnership during Climate Week NYC for The Earth Has a Song, participating in the panel “AIR — The Air We Share: Birds, Pollinators & Biodiversity.”

After more than 20 years working in conservation, the most important lesson I have learned is this: we cannot protect nature without investing in the women who live alongside it, depend on it, and are already defending it.

Biodiversity is more than a number of species. It is a web of relationships—between birds and forests, pollinators and food, people and landscapes, and ultimately between our own choices and the future of our planet.

Across Colombia and the Global South, I have witnessed women protecting some of the world’s most extraordinary biodiversity, often with very limited resources or recognition.

Women do not need to be invited into conservation. They are already conserving. What we need to do is trust them, invest in them, and create the space for them to lead.

Grateful to Daughters for Earth and Vital Voices Global Partnership for bringing women together and creating a space for these important conversations during Climate Week NYC.
