For more than two decades, Less Cancer has worked to build programs that connect public health, prevention, science-based education, and community engagement in ways that feel accessible and human. The Landmark Less Cancer Hike & Bike America grew from that same philosophy — that healthier communities are built not only through medicine and research, but also through participation, connection, movement, and shared purpose.
What makes this program different is that it was never designed to be only a traditional fundraiser or athletic event. It was designed as a national platform where anyone can participate regardless of age, ability, income, or experience. Some people donate. Some people ride hundreds of miles. Others simply walk through their neighborhood or share a landmark from their hometown. Every form of participation helps strengthen the larger mission of prevention, education, public health engagement, and community connection.

Wait… Is the Landmark Less Cancer Hike & Bike America a fundraiser, a movement, or a public health program?

On this day, May 25, 1961, President Kennedy challenged America to reach beyond what seemed possible and work together toward something bigger than ourselves.
Today, your opportunity is much simpler — but it still matters.
Join Landmark Less Cancer Hike & Bike America.
Walk. Ride. Move. Participate wherever you are.
There are no finish lines. This is about showing support for better health, prevention, healthcare access, stronger communities, and protecting the environment.
Be part of something that connects people, supports public health, encourages collaboration, and reminds us that movement — together — still matters.

There is something powerful about seeing a young woman from Virginia step into science, innovation, and leadership not for attention, but to help solve real problems that impact public health and our environment. Mia Heller’s work developing technology to help remove microplastics from water represents exactly the kind of thinking the world needs more of — curious, compassionate, determined, and grounded in science. That is why Less Cancer is honored to recognize her with the first annual Less Cancer Student Prize for Science and Public Health Impact. Like Less Cancer, Mia’s work is rooted in prevention. Cleaner water. Healthier environments. Better futures.
It also matters that Mia is part of a growing generation of young women leading in science and public health. Leadership does not begin with age or title. It begins with caring enough to ask questions and brave enough to search for solutions. The future looks brighter because young leaders like Mia Heller are already building it.

Not every cancer is preventable, but many risks can be reduced through informed choices, healthier environments, prevention, and early detection. This is not about fear.
It is about public health. It is about understanding that everyday exposures and behaviors can influence long-term health outcomes. Smoking, excessive UV exposure, indoor tanning, alcohol, and ni****ne addiction are all part of larger prevention conversations grounded in evidence-based science. Small changes matter. Education matters. Prevention matters. Protect your health. Protect young people. Protect the future. Source information includes guidance and research from the CDC, National Cancer Institute, and other leading public health and cancer organizations.

Indoor tanning increases the risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
A tan is not a sign of health. It is skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation.
According to the CDC, the National Cancer Institute, and other leading cancer and public health organizations, exposure to ultraviolet radiation from indoor tanning devices is associated with increased risk for melanoma and other skin cancers.
Allowing minors access to indoor tanning makes little public health sense. We should not normalize increased exposure to known carcinogens for young people.
Protect your skin.
Skip tanning beds.
Use sunscreen.
Wear protective clothing.
Get regular skin checks.
