From training team members and inspecting safety areas to testing PPE in the field, my experience at Ellwood Quality Steels has shown me just how broad a career in safety management can be.

It has also given me the opportunity to take what I’ve learned at Slippery Rock University and apply it in a real industrial environment, while gaining experience I can carry with me throughout my career.

I’m grateful to the team at Ellwood Quality Steels for the opportunity to learn alongside them and to the AIST Foundation for supporting my experience in the steel industry.

Safety is a team effort, and my internship also gave me the opportunity to work alongside the other EQS safety interns.

Here we are after presenting to the EQS Leadership Team. In addition to the hands-on side of safety management, the experience helped me see the importance of communicating observations, ideas and recommendations to others throughout an organization.

Working alongside the safety team and learning from professionals in the field has given me a much better understanding of how safety is incorporated into day-to-day steel manufacturing operations.

Sometimes understanding safety means getting directly involved in the work.

Following an incident, I had the opportunity to wear SPATS and cut runner bars as part of testing the personal protective equipment used for the task. Being able to experience the work firsthand provides valuable perspective on the conditions team members encounter and how PPE performs in the actual work environment.

For me, experiences like this connect what I’m learning in Safety Management at Slippery Rock University with the realities of safety in steel manufacturing.

Safety also means being prepared for situations that have nothing to do with the steelmaking process itself.

One of my projects involved inspecting an EQS severe weather shelter area and installing signage to help ensure the area was properly identified and in compliance. It may seem like a small detail, but making sure emergency areas are clearly marked and ready for use is an important part of maintaining a safe workplace.

My internship has given me exposure to the many different responsibilities that fall under safety management and the attention to detail each one requires.

One part of my internship has been helping train EQS team members using a virtual fire extinguisher training system.

The system provides an interactive way to practice responding to a fire and properly operating an extinguisher in a controlled environment. Experiences like this have shown me that effective safety training goes beyond explaining procedures. Giving team members an opportunity to practice how they would respond can help prepare them to act safely and confidently when it matters.

Hello everyone! My name is Daniel Babinsack, and I’m a Safety Management student at Slippery Rock University and an AIST Foundation Steel Intern Scholarship recipient. My internship experience has taken me to Ellwood Quality Steels in New Castle, Pa., where I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand what it takes to support a strong safety culture in a steel manufacturing environment.
