Turtle release is always a little bittersweet, but these six juvenile Painted Turtles now have a beautiful place to grow and thrive after their home pond was unfortunately removed by a new homeowner. Luckily, they were rescued by a lovely couple who thankfully knew that these young turtles needed help.

I sent the turtles to Cornell for a checkup and the vets at the wildlife hospital cleared them to be released, so upon obtaining formal permission to let them go at this gorgeous area, very close to where the turtles are from, they were ready to go.

Goodbye, little friends! Be safe, make good turtle decisions, and have long, wonderful lives! ❤️🐢

This is the world’s luckiest rat, Mr. Snowball. He is a domestic rat, presumably a dumped pet or ‘feeder’ rat, so not technically the wildlife I usually take, but he had been outside since December or January- he was only just caught on Friday night!

I’m honestly flabbergasted that he survived through a Western NY winter- and then six more months outside- especially being albino and having very poor vision!

I’ve got a soft spot for ratties, hence taking a domestic, so he’ll be spending a few days with me so I can monitor his health and make sure he’s ready for a long-term, loving home. He’s already pretty friendly and truly is such a brave boy!!

The bigger patients usually get a lot of outside love and attention, but even the smallest little friends have a place here. Achilles and Hephaestus are two juvenile deer mice who came in with foot injuries after a lawnmower run-in. They’re only about 6 grams each, but that doesn’t change or diminish the fact that they deserve help. They’ll grow and recover here with pain management and wound care until they’re ready to go back home to the wild. 🐭

I was going to share about how deer mice are native species and benefit us and our environment, and they do, but the value of their lives also shouldn’t be dependent on what they can contribute- simply by being alive and having the capacity to feel, they are valuable and deserving. ❤️‍🩹

I can’t tell you how happy I am to introduce little Solo!

When Solo came in on Tuesday, I didn’t think this orphaned babe would make it more than a few more minutes. Thankfully, her finders had realized she was in critical condition and took action immediately. If they hadn’t found her and gotten her here so quickly, she wouldn’t have had a chance. I added her intake picture at the end here- she was in horrific shape.

Solo has gone from emaciated, dehydrated, exhausted, and covered in fly eggs to a healthy, hungry, growing girl! This is such a challenging time of year in rehabbing, but cases like this make it so worth it. ❤️‍🩹

Buckle up! This is a rollercoaster (but it’s worth it)! Also, I know I’m overdue on posting… late July and August begin the second round of babies and it’s always rough. However!!

This video was supposed to prominently feature Professor X, but Baby Nutsy had different plans. You can catch a glimpse of Professor X in the background 😂 He came in on as a young adult/early spring baby on 7/16 having been caught by a cat with paralysis of both back legs, which is usually one of the worst possible presentations for a squirrel, but he did show a pain response on both back feet, so I immediately started him on antibiotics, pain meds, and anti-inflammatories.

Little by little, by the end of the first week, he was improving, and that has continued- from drag to crawl to limp to walk to run- and Professor X is now about 98% recovered. As a bonus, after a couple weeks as neighbors, he moved in with Baby Nutsy, which means that neither of these boys will have to be released alone!

The homeowner where Professor X was found will not keep his cat inside and laughed about how many animals it has caught and killed, so while we always want to return adults to their home territories, Professor X is a young enough adult/older juvenile that he and Baby Nutsy will be soft-released in a safer new area where they can both make the most of their second chances! ❤️

Frog, who is a beautiful American Toad (toads are technically frogs, to be fair) was caught in a mousetrap outside a company- an incredibly compassionate employee stopped and took the time to help, and it paid off! Frog has healed from broken leg and was released into a safe, toad-friendly area with no mousetraps! Thanks to Jes Weber for hosting this pretty lady for release!

Oops- I’m a week and a half introducing 🌰 Baby Nutsy 🥜, a transfer from Friends of the Forest Wildlife Rehabilitation

Baby Nutsy was caught and then dropped by a hawk, as far as we can tell, and suffered a hind foot wound and a number of puncture wounds on his head, likely from the bird’s talons. Those in combination with the likely fall resulted in some initial neurological concerns, but everything has now resolved and Baby Nutsy is doing great and right on track! ❤️

Another happy ending! Petey Pirate 🏴‍☠️the Eastern Chipmunk arrived after getting into a basement and finding the only mousetrap that had been left behind ages ago- and somehow getting (only) her eye caught in it! Thankfully, the lovely homeowner heard the snap and rushed Petey over. Petey’s eye fell out after a few days, but she healed beautifully, and after some antibiotics, pain relief, and a month to adjust to her changes in vision, Petey got to go back to her home yesterday! She even had a literal welcome mat waiting for her as she returned to her shed. Bye, Petey! Stay safe!
