Growing Our Own: The "Farm to Table" Pathway to Fire Service

​Ellie Arango shares her experience with Vista Fire and Rescue's innovative "farm to table" program—a home-grown pipeline designed to mentor and develop the next generation of firefighters from day one.
​Here is how the journey unfolds:
​ Step 1: The Cadet Program
It all starts early. Aspiring first responders can join the Cadet program as young as 15 years old, building foundational leadership, teamwork, and discipline.
​ Step 2: EMT & Mentorship
Cadets progress to earn their EMT certification, serving on the front lines right alongside experienced firefighters who mentor them through every call.
​ Step 3: EMT II / Paramedic
Next up: earning a paramedic license to become an EMT II—running Advanced Life Support (ALS) calls and managing emergency transports to local hospitals.
​ Step 4: Probationary Firefighter
The final stretch is completing the Fire Academy, fully qualifying candidates to apply for a position as a Probationary Firefighter with the department!

​From local youth to front-line heroes, this program proves that when you invest in your community, the community grows strong together.

The dangerous heat event that we have been warned about starts today-with triple digit temperatures in some areas- and high humidity.

Dangerous temps affect people who have asthma or other chronic conditions; as well as the very young and very old.
Check on your neighbors who live alone, the elderly, and pets.
Stay out of the sun, drink fluids even if you do not feel thirsty, change outdoor plans and NEVER leave a child or pet in a parked car.

Two weeks ago, local Vista resident Jeff was out for a walk in his neighborhood when he suffered a sudden medical emergency. The fall caused him to lose consciousness, break his nose, and begin seizing.

​When firefighter-paramedic Austin Delaney and his crew arrived on scene, they were met with a major challenge: Jeff was unconscious, the bystanders who called 911 were strangers, and there was absolutely no identification or medical history available.

​Fortunately, Jeff had prepared for the unexpected.
​By using the emergency shortcut on Jeff's iPhone, Paramedic Delaney was instantly able to access his Medical ID. Within seconds, the crew knew Jeff's identity, his emergency contacts, and crucial medical history—including the fact that he has A-fib and takes blood thinners. This vital information allowed the medics to provide precise, rapid care before transporting him to Palomar Hospital.

​Thanks to those quick actions and Jeff’s foresight, he made a full recovery! Today, Jeff stopped by Station 3 to express his gratitude to the crew and help piece together the events of that day.
