On Saturday, May 23, 2026, animal care keepers at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens hit the picket line to call attention to their 3-year long contract fight for fair wages. Currently, they are asking for a $0.70 wage increase, while the CEO makes $680,000 annually.

If you want to support the animal care keepers visit the link below to send a letter to CEO Allen Monroe.

We will be picketing tomorrow at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens! Join us on the picket line.

"Things are getting heated at The Living Desert, and it sounds like this labor dispute could spill into a pretty tense weekend. The Animal Care Keepers Union is accusing the zoo of anti-union behavior, claiming workers have been pulled into anti-union meetings and that outside union-busting consultants are being used during negotiations. The union also says management has stalled contract talks for years, despite workers voting to unionize back in 2023.

At the center of the entire fight? About 70 cents an hour."

AFSCME District Council 36 endorses Xavier Becerra for California Governor!

“Choosing the next Governor of California is one of the most critical choices we can make this year, and Xavier Becerra is the right choice. With attacks coming from this current administration, we need a governor who is willing to fight for us, and Becerra did that as attorney general and will continue to do that as Governor.” - Veronica Gunn, President of AFSCME District Council 36

From everyone at AFSCME District Council 36, we are sending a huge congratulations to the members of AFSCME 3299 who have reached a historic tentative agreement with UC.

They secured the highest wage increases in their union's history and the UC's most affordable healthcare. By reaching an agreement, they were able to avert their indefinite strike, which was supposed to begin today. Once again, congratulations and know that we are always standing in solidarity with you!

AFSCME Local 773 President Kevin Larsen spoke at a press conference Tuesday in the City of Commerce about the two cardroom regulations passed by the California Department of Justice in February.

Cities such as Commerce, Hawaiian Gardens, Compton are bracing for major budget deficits, which will lead to cuts to city services and layoffs.

AFSCME District Council 36 members affected by these regulations are continuing to get organized, fight back, and use their union power to ensure that their families, friends, and neighbors continue to have access to resources and city services.

Workers at the Museum of Contemporary Art, represented by AFSCME Local 126, have been fighting for a fair contract since last summer. The bargaining team submitted a wage proposal in December but have yet to receive a response from management. This prolonged delay is concerning and unacceptable. You can show your support by scanning the QR code in the video or visiting https://tinyurl.com/yfez5u3b to send an email to MOCA’s Deputy Director demanding that MOCA leadership respond to the bargaining team and negotiate wage increases in good faith!
